I couldn't post my couple of variations for obvious reasons.

Outtakes

I think I should have gone for the "Spin!" shot but my wife talked me into the "Coupon Tree" shot.

What do you folks think?

I like the one you submitted best. The flowers in the other two just seem to clutter it up, to me. I think the submission one has a nice juxtaposition between the real leaves / tree and the fake leaves, without hitting you over the head with the real flowers in the mix.

Any way you slice it, a nice shot. Good composition and lighting, and very creative.

Thanks Mike :-)

After I had a chance to see my submission for a while I got the feeling I needed to get a more defined sense of subject.

I was going for a "Leaves on the Ground" kinda random clutter but that may have been what hurt me.

Plus..the folks here really don't like set-ups that much. I have been here long enough to know this but Nyaaah..nyahh..nyaah..I dont care :-)

Many of my shots I convert over to one of the Photoshop art brushes like Drybrush or something. In those context many of my lower scorer shots really "Pop". Because that is what they were intended to have done to them from inception.

When you apply a Photoshop art brush to a photo the photo needs to have a certain graphical nature to it so it makes the transfer well. As a matter of fact..this is my first subject in the graphics class for my daughters high school art class next fall.

I will post some of my Art Brush photo renditions I will be using for my workshop sometime later.

Something New
Outtakes

My husband wanted me to submit Shaping the rim, but I opted for the Created by Fire since it impacted me more than the other shot.
Also - the process that created the flames only lasted about 10 seconds, so I didn't have a lot of time to frame the shots. I wish I'd been able to spend the whole day there !!
Critiques Welcomed !

I really like "Vase in Fire 2". To me, it has a lot more impact than your submission. The thing that detracted from "Created By Fire" for me was the "noise" that was created by all the little holes in the wall. It made the photo seem cluttered. I really like how the opening in the wall is so nicely emphasized in "Vase in Fire 2". It makes the flames and the glowing volcanic orb of the vase stand out so much more. Of course, this is just one guys opinion, but I really like that shot much more than you submission. Good work.

After looking some more at your submission, I wanted to comment that I think it was overly lightened in your photo editing software. I know there's so much variation in monitors that it's hard to please everyone looking at your shots, but I love the dark impact of your outtakes and think that the lightened version really loses something.

Take care,

Hokie I like the middle one the best. I'm sorry to say I didn't interpert the bits of paper as leaves. If I think of the words as sound bites then Spin Control become about honesty in the middle of hype.

I'm very fond of using my art filters in Paint Shop Pro. Part of my reason for being here is to make better photos to use with my art.

I look forward to seeing the painted photos.

Thanks Aelith :-)

I think the hard thing for folks struggling with comments and votes here at this site is to make it very clear in your mind what you want to do with your efforts.

Once you have your goals in mind it wont matter what others say UNLESS that is your goal..only to please other folks.

The art filters idea is a hard one to think about. What I tell the kids is this. Not all images are designed to be used in an artbrush. And don't settle for the first brush. And always keep your PSD files so you can duplicate actions and of course make your own brush actions...they will become your style.

Sometimes the hard thing when using art brushes is getting over the "newness factor" where everything looks cool at first. I require all kids to have had a traditional art class before they get to participate in the graphics class after school. I don't want just photoshop guru's totally controlled by the latest digital fashion.

And it all starts with the pencil and paper.

Thanks mci -
I have to say that I honestly agree with you after comparing the two. I also like the fact that you can see the entire opening of the oven in the Vase in the fire2 shot, something that had been commented on. Thanks for giving me a new perspective.

I like the one that you submitted - it is a little "busy" for me, but it's an original and clever concept. To me, the flowers just don't look like they belong in the shot.

Just think you have entered twice and gone from 20th to 5th place. I suspect you be in the top 3 this week. I don't know about any image being too busy for those rules are for the books and courses we take which are wrote by people that want to make a dollar. Create your own style for your eyes can see more than any critic or teacher. Besides what's good today is not necessarily good tomorrow, styles come and go.

Want to ditto the above comments, right along the line. I think the shape of the opening is intensely graphical and the middle shot would have been one of my high scorers had you entered it. It just clicks for me. Beautiful.

Hokie,
I like setups, most of my high scorers have been setups. I wasn't so keen on the one you submitted for this challenge, but your Abandoned one is still a favourite - love that shot!

I tend to agree with you about creating your own style, and I rarely rate photos based on "book rules" - I am far too inexperienced technically to do that!! My comments are based on how the photo appeals to ME.
BTW bobgaither, I LOVE your photo Across the Straits - it was most definitely one of my favorites in the "New" challenge.

Anyone got any comments on my two outtakes for "Something New"?

Not too keen on the first, but do like the second. It does reflect that moment of uncomfort and relief when finally taking off new shoes after wearing them the first time.
Needs more contrast, or something, is a bit dark overall, unless that's intentional.

PS Tell Rufus she has nice legs and feet!

I liked the one you submitted and rated it a 9 or a 10.

I was very surprised it didn't do better but it was one of the best last week in my opinion. :-)
