I love this photograph but I look at it from the artist's point of view. So my question is, if you were this child's mother or father, is it an image you would like to have in the family album or framed on the wall? Or not at all.... Is it too dramatic? too dark? Too grown up?

She was giving her mother this look when I caught the photograph :)

Thanks!

Great question (and great photo!)...I'm not a parent, but it does seem very dark-natured for a child's photo. If it were my child I would certainly appreciate it, but choose a different photo for my wall while she is young.

I might grow to appreciate it even more as she grew older, though...I dunno.

That's exactly the term I was searching for...dark natured. I just love catching all of the different looks these kids give out when they are not posing :) Thanks!

I really like it :-) Nothing negative to say..I'm sure some people may comment on her hair being slightly in her face, but I think it's an innocent photo and well shot. I think some people may also think the soft focus and dark hair give it a goth feel, but not this gal.

I like it, it's dramatic.

HAhahaha ms Joanns it is a most beautiful picture. It is not a dark at all to me, i like it. Every picture of the family and a friends is a treasure to me. So many are all a same happy smile, but this is a most wonderful and a fun face. It is special i think. I like it.

Cool shot. I would leave more space on top of her head...as is it seems like her head is pushed down.

If she were my child, I would love it. I think I would hang it on my wall where I keep "my" pictures, not so much for everyone to see, not those that are "just right", but those that mean something to me.

I think its a wonderful photo - you have captured that moment perfectly. If the child were mine I would love to have this hung in my house. Great work

it's well done but it does look a little spooky for a young kid imho (maybe even for a young adult like myself : o). It has a The Ring Meets Disney feel to it. I like the background and the dress is always cute.

Well, I must say I am relieved to know that I'm not alone in liking it. I showed it to a guy at work today and he didn't like it at all. Also, thank you for taking the time to write your opinion!

After a second look, maybe it's the dark circle under her eye that is a bit spooky to some people. It's still a great shot, maybe if you cloned that out it'd make her look a bit more innocent.

I dunno anymore.....tooo sleeeeepy.

I think it's a wonderful photo. It's different and I tend to sway towards more unique shots then just the run of the mill children's portraits. I can see how some might think it is a bit "Dark" but I guess it's just a matter of personal taste. You did a wonderful job with the treatment of the photo.

That is what I was going to say as well. If the shot is uncropped, I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to edit in some background. Otherwise I think this is a wonderful photo.

From me too!

Regarding the image - I like aspects of it but some bother me. I'm personally not too keen on the dark background - something about the pattern of the blur looks strange and it feels too dark - like the colours used in a vampire movie. I like the picture of the girl but... is the dress worn over one of those hooped petticoats - the shape seems odd at the rear...

Guess I'm the odd one out today.
I don't particularly like it. It's a bit odd in ways to me anyway. Something about the pose, bare feet, poofy dress in back and the dark, almost sinister feel to the whole shot that feels wrong to me.
It's also not very flattering and young ladies should portray sweetness & innocence in my opinion.
But who am I to judge? Just one opinion.

No, I feel similarly about it. As I said there are aspects I like - her hair on her face, the she isn't directly face-on to camera to name two. But overall I find the ambience of it somewhat dark, the way the dress rises at the back rather strange and the background too overpowering.

Sorry, Joanns, thought it best to be honest...

She looks like she is about to open her mouth to reveal fangs.

It *is* darker natured.. but I think that it's brilliant in that as a society we tend to show children as these pure and innocent light-filled beings all the time.. when any parent, (or caregiver), will be quick to let you in on the reality.

If I was a parent, I would absolutely *LOVE* this photo.. but then, I know parents that would be horrified by it. You just never can tell :)

Oh but this one is lovely...

Don't get me wrong, I don't have kids and I'm not overly fond of cutesy, sugary pictures of other peoples' kids but... there's something dark about the first one and something so light and HAPPY about this one.

So having the two photos in her portfolio will allow her to demonstrate a range of emotions, instead of being a photo prop. I agree, not all parents would like the first picture.

I think it's absolutely gorgeous. Who wouldn't want a photograph of their child looking like a character out of a book? All children like to play make-believe and dressing her up and putting her in a different setting accomplishes this. I think it's really beautiful. I like the other image as well.

I second this.

Everyone will "see" and feel something in their own kid's pictures due to the love of their own.
I was looking these objectively and asked myself the very same question posed in the subject line.

Pic #1 no, this one, absolutely.

Opinions are strange. The world WOWS Picasso while I don't care for him at all. At least I'll give my honest opinion, but in no way is it meant to offend.
Now Artyst and his opinions are strange, but that's why we Love him so.
:)
