I'm gonna preface this by saying, "pretty please with sugar on top don't threadjack my Out and About thread with political stuff."

Thank you.

Anyone interested in getting together to shoot the parade on Inauguration Day? It's January 20th. I've lived in DC a long time, but never gone down for the parade. I know that for most of us who live in the area, these big events are a hassle. But when you think about it, it's really kind of cool to be a part of these kinds of events.

So, any interest?

There's an outside chance I could make it, would love to do so if I can arrange it at work. Please keep me informed, and thanks for the invite. Should be lots of opportunities for good shootin'.

I am one who sometimes avoids that hassle you refer to, but might be persuaded. It's on a Thursday. If memory serves schools will be closed for the day in the district, and most DC & fed employees will be off too. Some streets are closed so Metro probably gets the nod. What are your thoughts regarding security? Will they make it tough for photogs? What about tripod vs monopod vs no pod? If the weather is like what we have had recently the multitudes will appear. The parade may provide some colorful photo opps. Got any ideas for cool vantage points in mind?

Make sure to get action shots of the eggs hitting his limo.

I suppose you can take pictures of this, but with all the concerns of security and 9/11 hysteria and such, I'd be concerend about being hassled by the police.

Don't take deapee with you - he gets rousted by the police every other time he takes out his camera. LOL

edit: spelling

It's kinda tempting to go. But at the same time I don't want to go to DC if I don't have to. If I decide to go I'd let you know.

Having done these kinds of events, we shouldn't get a huge hassle. No tripods or monopods will be allowed. Pack light when it comes to your gear (camera body, 2 lenses max)The secret is getting down there early and being willing to wait a bit. It's kinda fun actually, and more fun if you go with people.

Metro is totally the way to go. I'd love to have some other people come down. I'm taking the day off and everything. :)

Well I figure it like this. If something does happen, I'll get some kickin' pictures. ;)

Go for it and have a good time... I went to Reagans first 24 years ago as an AU undergrad. It was a freezing cold day and I had a cast on one leg - with toes sticking out. I still have a picture of him going bye standing up thru the sunroof. Think I took it with a 110 camera

Hey guys!!! Long time no hear.. Crazy around here ;)

Unfortunately I will be working the event and providing medical support at one of the first aid tents :(

Just like the state funeral, I am doubtful that I'll get any good shots in. Maybe one of myself and Da Prez ;)

Clara- Wish I could join you all, but I'm not going to be able to get away from work after all. Maybe a Cherry Blossom get together in the Spring? I'm sure you will all have some great photos from the inauguration, but most of all have fun... (BTW, I've always really liked your shot of the Washington Memorial!) --Ray

And since the grand event is this week- we have a bump.

Anyone wanna come keep me company? Please?

I have been thinking about this a lot. I get myself psyched up and then I read another article in the Post about the security hassles and street closures, etc.; and go back to vascilating. Weather forecast is not very promising either- "Snow showers at times. Highs in the low 40s and lows in the low 20s", but it could be worse, `tis January.

That's about what i'm thinking. It would be a shame to miss all the cool people shots, but it's just too much hassle and it's all, including the weather, is just too crazy. One of my coworkers is going though, so i may still change my mind.

It's honestly not as bad if you have someone else there with you. I was out in 100 degree temps for the Regan funeral. It would have sucked if Setzler hadn't been there too.

We can meet up at an outlying metro and ride in. It's really not that bad.

Totally off topic, but I juggled in the 1992 inauguration parade for Clinton. I was part of the Oregon delegation at the time.

Okay- for those worried about security hassles etc- here's the plan.

1) We will be metroing in to the City from Glenmont Metro (Red Line) Parking is free that day. :)

2) Bring a small (think purse size) camera bag. No backpacks. If you are bringing an SLR- take your best telephoto lens and a second wide angle lens.

3) Wallet with ID.

4) Dress in layers. Dress your camera battery in layers too. ;)

Parade starts at noon. If we leave around 8am- we should be able to jockey for good positioning. Keep in mind the cold is in our favor- people may stay home due to the elements. That gives us better positioning to shoot.

If it gets really bad- we can always abandon ship and go shoot Union Station. And just think- all those oppertunities for the Faceless challenge...:)

Found out last night that I have relatives coming to visit and will have to pass on photographing the inauguration.

Good Luck Clara, hope you get some great shots to share with us.

Just a couple of shots from today. I spent the afternoon scouting locations.

Should be fun this Thursday. :)
