It gets very discouraging when you use your creativity for the challenge that says "Take your pencil anywhere, do anything you like to it, but make the shot your own. Your photograph must physically contain a pencil and must be taken this week (8/12-8/18). Creativity is essential.", and you are told this:

"8/19/2002 (2:19:00 AM) - This has absolutely nothing to do with pencils, period. Hello?"

There is more than one pencil in my submission, don't people look before they vote?? If it doesn't meet the challenge, recommend it for disqualification!

Don't take it to heart. Some people are only capable of making rude comments. I find there's quite a bit of originality in this week's challenge and methinks everyone meets the challenge of having a pencil in it. Some entries seem rather contrived,in the sense that a pencil has been thrown in to make it meet the challenge. But considering your previous entries, I doubt yours would be that case.

Actually, please do not recommend a photo for disqualification because you feel it doesn't meet the challenge. Whether a photo meets the challenge should be considered in your voting, but is not grounds for disqualification. There's too much grey area.

let me get this right? Now people are saying that the pict had to be about pencils?
I think not. It just had to have one in the pict and be creative.
People have got to start voting these photos on artistic quality instead of looking for anything that could possibly lower a vote.

Absolutly Correct. I think we have our work cut out for us this week. My first observation indicates to me that a lot of people put a lot of work into the "Pencil" challenge. We should all appreciate this effort.
Good Luck

I totally agree! I am going to have to make quite a few passes through the submissions this week to do my commenting - there was a lot of creativity at work in the "Pencil" photos, and I think, overall, the quality is high. I am enjoying voting/commenting on this challenge very much.

I agree with everyone here. I'm going to start at a 10 and then go down as necessary - usually I start at 5 and up or down accordingly.

I believe that there has been a lot of effort this week.

GREAT WORK everyone!!!!

I have changed my voting style a bit.

I used to start my voting by having my first vote be all about my first impression.

The first time I saw a photo I voted. Then as the week went on I may have modified my vote as I got a chance to see the photo more and more.

Now I look at the photos first and don't even think about a vote. I may not even vote till thursday or friday even if I have the time.

All I know is even in beginner photos that may need a lot of technical polish I find good stuff..emotion, effort and natural talent.

My more positive outlook on others photos has really made this site a lot funner. :-)

I'm going to have to change my voting style too. My voting curve has always been to high but there are so many excellent pictures in this lot that I am going to have to drop the curve. Great will now start at 6. Then excellent, fantastic, extrodinary, Blow my mind.

My votes have always been right along with the majority or higher than the majority. I have to say, though, that my opinions and critique has certainly evolved. I know better what to look for now than I did in April - in my own photos, too!

i guess nobody saw the pencil in my photo. i guess its because its not a writing pencil, rather the pencil of an animal.

oh well. creativity is hampered by a majority of voters on this site who glance at a picture for 2 seconds and vote. i guess i appreciate those who see it and find the creativity in it.

maybe in the future i'll post more typical photos.

Anton': the voting has just begun. There is the rest of the week to consider. No. Typical shots don't always fare better. Try to keep an open mind, and step back a bit to take the comments in the vein they are intended... not to discourage but to help.

EEK. Not suposed to tell which one is yours. Hurry hurry, edit it before the moderators do it for you! Don't like people to get penalized for not knowing "etiquite". I hope I post this in time.

Sorry about that! Problem solved. Didn't even realize I had the quote in there. My apologies. Doesn't look like anyone is too worried about the original comment though, so not really a huge deal, I guess.
Thanks for letting me know about that.

I took the word "pencil" as being only 1 pencil in the shot.

"Take your pencil anywhere".... I thought I had to actually take my pencil shot somewhere other than my home:)Oh what a week I've had hauling my pencil around....lol

I see some great shots this week...

Connie,
This was discussed last week in the forums. There should be at least one pencil, but you could use as many as you wanted. Also, home happens to fit under the category of anywhere ;o)

I'm voting under the assumption that the photo doesn't have to be ABOUT pencils. If it has a pencil in it then I move on to other more important matters.

Thanks for all the support and encouragement about the irrational comment that I referenced at the beginning of the thread. I've gotten over it now!! I took a look at all the thumbnails this morning, and agree that it looks like a good display of creativity this week.

Sorry I don't read all of the threads in the forums. Guess I should start to do that :)

Oh no. If you're like me you probably spend enough time here already. :oP
It was just a topic that came up, and a few of us were a little worried that the voters might think some of those things and detract points. If you thought it then I'm sure lots of other folks did too. Unfortunately, there are a lot of voters who never read the forums.

There is only one photo where I cannot see a pencil (well there are two, but one has been explained somewhat on the forums). Rather than mark down for definite I have PMed the photographer for their input, maybe I am missing something. I have looked for reflections and all but not seeing it.
