I have a really stupid question to ask everyone here. What is it between people from the US and people from Canada? Why is there always tongue in cheek responses? Do Canadians and Americans get along?
PLease excuse my dumbness, just wondering from the other side of the world. This has always been a question in my mind but just too scared to ask. Please forgive if I have upset anyone.

Think of us like two brothers who like each other but give each other a hard time anyway.

I do believe you hit the nail right on the head with that one Juggle.

I live in Canada, visit the USA at least once a week,,,, have had the good fortune to work there and have a great number of friends on both sides of the border.

This past summer I travelled for 3 months through the USA, visited 21 states and made a bevy of new friends, and truth be told, where it not for my licence plates (that's tags in the USA), and the occasional mandatory EH at the end of my sentences, I seriously doubt anyone would have recognized me for a Canadian.

We truly are alike, and our friendship is such that we have the longest unguarded border in the world.

It's like they said above...sibling rivalry I suppose...just poking fun of eachother whenever we can. :-D

I find it strange that most neighbouring countries aroud the world have this "pet hate" going on

Australia/New Zealand
Japan/Korea
USA/Canada
England/Scotland
France/Spain
Isreal/Iraq

Wouldn't it be nice if the world made a new year resolution to start talking and stop fighting.

except I think some of those countries jokingly "dislike" each other, whereas others may more genuinely dislike each other. :X

Although Canada/USA relationship do on occasion undergo certain tensions, I have never encountered any scenarios where we "dislike" each other. We may bicker and disagree on occasion, but I earnestly believe that ours is a very strong bond and that we truly feel united.

Simple explanation...

Canada is a liberal country (although the West has been voting to the right in recent years) while the US is being run by the Republicans.
I think that Canada has the same issues with the US as any other country.

I don't want to offend anyone but Americans have a tendency to be a bit too proud of themselves and seem to think they have the right answer for everything and when someone opposes their ideology, that someone becomes an "ennemy". Criticism is something that the US has difficulty dealing with.

I don't hate the USA, I have many American friends but I hate the fact that it's a country completly closed on itself (how much international news do you get on a normal new broadcast?) and that people keep getting brainwashed.

The US is a powerful nation that could be a great leading nation but falls short because of greed and arrogance.

Go ahead now and call me a f*#@inkg liberal...

"The US is a powerful nation that could be a great leading nation but falls short because of greed and arrogance." that statement doesnt make u a liberal. its just if you dont live here its not your place to say, news bents in other countries generally don't do the great people in the u.s. justice. many people in other countries like to bash this country, but its still an amazing place.

anyways i love canadians/canada but when i lived in nz there seemed to be a more geniune rivalry against the aussies, nothing rediculous though.

Not so sure the Korea/Japan anomosity can be called a "pet hate", there exist a deep resentment and hatred amoungst the general Korean public for Japan. The history has not been kind to Korea and many issues are still unresolved such as the forced prostitution camps/sc "comfort women" and other atrocities committed agains the Koreans by Japan. Sad but true.

Wouldn't it be nice if the world made a new year resolution to start talking and stop fighting.

Just like me and Jacko.

I think most Americans and most Canadians respect their neighbours for who they are: friends who share similar values but who do things a bit differently.

I like the brother analogy. In my version the US would be the 'supposedly' wiser big brother who tries to instill his values and beliefs on the little brother. When little brother was young and naïve it worked, but he's grown up now and has learned to think for himself. ;)

Happy New Year

Its exactly the same for Aussies and Kiwi's too. Its all tongue and check. I think when you have two countrys so close together, with pertty similar cultures and even simlar accents you will always get one claiming to be better than the other.

Heck its even the same with two sporting teams from similar areas lol Its just about being proud of who you are and where you are from.

LOLOL !!!! I could not stop laughing !!!
Israel and Iraq have a pet-hate relationship ??!?! OMG I need to sit down and relax...
If you really are looking for a pet-hate relationship, then maybe, just maybe you could put Egypt next to Israel. But Iraq?! no pets here. I can assure you that! And I do avoid the politics...

My take on Canadians: Wonderful people with some very cool places in their country. Extremely nice and resounding with hospitality, and also good for a jeer every now and then : )

USA/Canada "rivalry" is rooted in history; before there was a USA or a Canada, there were colonies of England, France, and Spain on the North American continent. When what is now the USA revolted against England, the colonies in what is now canada remained loyal to the king. Canada was used as a staging area in the Revolutionary War (this is way oversimplified), and after the USA became "officially" independent Canada remained a colony of the British Empire.

Therefore, to American sensibilities, the Canadians represented conservative, old-world attitudes and political institutions, the very things we had revolted against.

The rivalry's "all in good fun" now, but it wasn't always that humorous.

Robt.

You just lumped ALL of America together in that one statement. I, personally don't care -- but I guarantee there are just as many Canadians that don't deal well with criticism as there are Americans and Germans and Norweigans and ... you get the picture.

Besides...if America didn't protect Canada, some terrorist nation would come and take it over.

I'm always amazed when people think these gross oversimplifications (or even mischaracterizations) are useful. I'm not sure Canadians, either liberal or conservative, would appreciate it if I tried to "simplify" how a nation of millions of people with diverse existences ARE. I lived abroad for many years and did so among a number of Canadians. I can assure you that Canadians, much like Americans, could often be touchy about certain issues.

I don't even know what this means? What question does this answer and what the hell does this have to do with US/Canadian relationship?

Generally speaking, youngsters resent advice/counsel/guidance from oldsters. This applies to nation states as well as individuals, i.e. Jacko-Beagleboy.

Canada-Australia-New Zealand-USA...In World War 2 we worked together in the South Pacific to fight/kill/defeat our common enemy, the Japanese. HOWEVER, when we gathered for respite from fighting you would not believe the sort-of-friendly insults and, sometimes, the brawls which would break out. But in the end we were all buddies with a common purpose.

I do not recall Liberal/Conservative debates...ever, in those days. That is something which has developed in more recent years.

I am pleased to have today a talented young Canadian friend in DPC who is burdened with a political bent which is different than mine. The important message for this forum's participants
is that, while we enjoy belaboring each others
politics, we do not let it interfere with our friendship.

We live in parlous times...with perils greater than any time in history. We need remember that pointed quote: "If we do not hang together, we will surely hang separately."

So, to my old wartime comrades, Canucks-Aussies-Kiwis...It's good to hear from ya Mate, eh!!
