Since you're all up at midnight anyway... you should know (if you don't already) that there's an unofficial chatroom created for DPChallenge fans. It's lots of fun, so you should go visit.

DPChallenge Fanatics Chatroom

In addition to that chat room, there is a teen DPC chat room(ages 13-18 only PLEASE) at the same site! Just sign up with the same name that you use in DPC and go to the Teen_DPCers room instead of the lobby(it uses the same link as before though).

Will there eventually be a link placed on the home page for the chatroom?

This is not an official answer but I tend to doubt it. The DPChallenge chatroom is unofficial and is maintained by Lisa, a DPChallenge user, and is not actually part of the DPChallenge site. Since it is not actually part of DPChallenge I would think such a link would be unlikely.

A link in the Tutorials and Links section might be a good idea, though, and I'll suggest it.

OH NO! A chat room for this already addictive site?
I just went there and it look really fun!
There goes my life as I knew it...
Or was it already gone when I first found this place???

What is this 'life' thing people keep talking about?

Poor moderators... They lost their life long ago and can`t even remember... :)

The chatroom is great, but unfortunately the way it works is not great for dialup users :(. It's web based, and involves a script that constantly reloads the page of text, which gets bigger and bigger over time, so after 30 minutes or so (less if it's busy) I have to logout and back in again to fix the lag.

If someone else wants to try creating a better chatroom it would be great :). I know it's not Lisa's fault, she just doesn't have the services available from her webhost to run anything better. I could possibly do it, but I think the bandwidth costs might be a bit steep.

Why not use the IRC net? I mean this was built for chat's. #dpchallenge seems to be available.

How accessible is IRC to users behind corporate firewalls?

IRC is firewalled by a fair number of companies (ports 6666 and 6667 usually), and its tricker to (discretely) install an IRC client than a web browser...
Does anyone know of any other HTML-based chat programs out there?

why not use aol instant messenger or icq? they allow multi-user chats dont they?

just an idea ..

It depends on your companys policy if they block IRC or not. But if they block it you probably shouldn't chat in the first place ;-) Here it is allowed and an IRC client is installed. But that's probably because I'm one of the the admins :-)

I, for one, don't have aol. I also am not familiar without different chats, but what is available for most users?

You don't need to have AOL to run AOL Instant Messenger (I for one, am not an AOL member but have Instant Messenger). A client is available at The AIM home page. If you do not wish to install software they also have a browser-based version with no download required.

The only catch is I'm not sure how a user can join an existing chat without being invited. Anyone know this?

I was under the impression that AIM was a one-to-one chat system, rather than a chatroom-based system. If an IM style chat is being considered, I'd recommend Jabber (www.jabber.org), which I already manage a handful of servers for, and the clients can talk to all four/five major IM systems... ;o)

My vote is for IRC, since I've been sitting in the same IRC channel for the past 7 years. If corporate firewalls block ports 6666 and 6667, find a server that has 6665 open (I always used to use this port).

If anyone's interested, I could setup a private IRC server on one of my machines, as long as it doesn't get too rediculously overcrowded.

I personally like Trillian for the same reason... it does all four major chat clients plus IRC.

If we go the IRC route, could we set up an IRC sever on port 80, or does anyone know of one on port 80?

Manic,

Ive tried and failed to get Jabber working before. I could get one of the clients installed but I was totally unable to chat to anyone ouside the jabber system.

Got any quick and dirty suggestions/instructions? I'd love to use an IM system that could talk to everyone.

I had trillian installed for several weeks but found that after a few weeks it lost ability to pick up some messenger services and was left providing me with MSN IM only. It may also have been responsible for other problems on my PC at the time, hard to pin down. I took it off and things are fine now.
Sigh.

I'm not sure what Lisa is using for the chat, but I wonder if it can be set not to buffer the entire conversation? Perhaps this could be set on a user by user basis? I think we should try to make the current chat dialup friendly rather than change to something that we would have less control over and will undoubtedly cause other problems...

Was this some time ago? I know it used to have problems but the latest version is very stable.

Unfortunately, the chat program is proprietary, and thus we can't modify the back-end sourcecode, much to my annoyance :o/
