Hi,

I thought there were a lot of really good entries in the mechanical challenge. It will be interesting to see who wins with all the good ones! Even the duplicate subjects looked very different from one another, for example, the bikes. Well done all!!

Owen--an small aside from the current discussion, though pertaining to the mechanical challenge:

The "split voting/multidimensional system" really works. I got a comment from you today, and it's very helpful. I think this is the first time I've received one of these (at least in this second incarnation of the tool).

Anyway, I thought I'd point out as someone on the receiving end, that the system works, the structure helps, and your comments along with the ratings were on the mark.

Keep up the wonderful work!

Regards---Neil

BTW - I can't see your sig line because they're off in my preferences. I guess I'll have to turn them on to see what it says!

That's about where I was yesterday evening, but I took a little bit of a beating overnight--down to 5.64xx early this morning.

The Mechanical Challenge is the first I have submitted a photo to. This has been a fun and learning experience. Thanks for all the comments. They are a big help. I see now that I will have to invest in a more advanced digital camera to be able to keep up with the expectations of the DP challenges. Until I can, I’ve learned a little more about what I need to do with what I have. Again, thanks for the comments and help.

I don’t know how good a 4.0256 is, but only hope it will place me above last.

Well you probably won't be last... but either way, good to see your having some fun!

As to what your camera can do - there's been a few pretty solid shots from it submitted here....

Maybe that will provide some inspiration.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I have taken some nice shots with this camera. However, it sure would be nice to have more control.

IM STILL WALKING THROUGH DP WITH BABY STEPS AND AM REALLY ENJOYING THE EXPERIENCE. ALL THE COMMENTS HAVE BEEN WONDERFUL AND VERY HELPFUL. I'VE LEARNED THAT IF I INCREASE THE SIZE OF MY IMAGE I WILL MOST LIKELY GET BETTER SCORES. SO FAR MY AVERAGE SCORE IS A 5.30- THANKS FOR SUCH A WONDERFUL SITE DP.

Most comments i have recieved in a long time. Thanks!
Except for the one comment on the title (to quote 'yup') they were all helpful - and i agree with them.
My solution to them is to get a new camera. I will eventually arrive i hope..having troubles getting a mail order outfit to discover WHY they are in business (to SELL things....).
My score, while low, is improving. Since i have managed a bottom 10% in 2 of my last 5 challenges, this may not be that bad!

My first challenge submission too. Most comments were very helpful. I'm sure I'll do better in the future. The key, I think, is to at least TRY. It's easy to sit on the sidelines....but the real fun and satisfaction comes when you participate. It's been inspirational seeing some of the other GREAT shots from experienced photographers here.

Thanks for all the help,
Mark

Again, the first challenge I've entered. Most of the comments received are very appreciated and helpful. However, the following comment makes me want to give up until I can afford a better camera. I have very limited use of what I have now. No exposure control and flash either on or off. Never the less, I will keep shooting pictures with my cheap HP until I can get something better. It's still a fun learning experience and thank you all for the comments and help.

Rick

Comment:
I don't like the way this is lit at all--the bright XXXX and XXXXX in the foreground really distracts me from the XXXXXXX. Perhaps shooting from closer, and maybe a little lower, would have given it a little more impact. Also, you could try a longer exposure with no flash (on a tripod), or maybe just a little less flash.

Dont' let any of the comments discourage you.
I really don't think it's all about how nice of a camera you have.

A better camera gives you more options, but I bet if you put your camera in the hands of a pro you would be amazed at the type of photo's they could take with it.

I was amazed when I looked at the photo page linked to my camera.
I thought to myself I have the same camera as what was used for these awesome photo yet my photo's are not even close to being as good.

This is also my first challenge and I'm having a blast!

Don't give up, it's all about having fun. :)

I just looked at the link to your camera.
Some amazing photo's there too.

It's all about the guy behind the camera.

There are some really talented people on DPC.

Don't get discouraged...my camera isn't the greatest however I have improved greatly since I started. Highest score is 5.98.

Learn as much as you can and when you finally get the camera you want, you'll be miles ahead. I get my D70 this weekend and what I've learned here since joining mid-November has giving me a huge jump.

Also try to take the consturctive components of the comments and disregard the negatives. Good Luck.

Don't get me wrong; I do take the constructive comments as being very helpful. I guess I was just getting a little discouraged at first being a newbee with a newbee camera. Your replies have made me feel a lot better. Gotta learn how to crawl first. Well, I'm not going to give up. Can't wait for the next challenge to come out. This first challenge has been a blast.

Thanks for all the comments!
