As promised here is the e-mail conversation between myself and the distorted poet starting yesterday:

Distorted Poet Comment: "just simply bad... sorry.."

Mail to Distorted Poet: "Please be more articulate when telling someone that his or her image sucks, thanks."

Reply Mail: "maybe you could be a bit more of a sport, and not email me when you have a bad score from someone. in other words. dont reply to this email.. and dont ever write me again."

So I did respond, because I feel that this guy overreacted and simply misunderstood what I was saying, so my response:

"Dear Poet,

I am sorry that I offended you by writing you and although I was not going to write you back I thought you may need to hear this: you will need to have slightly thicker skin to take what is dished out here. Listen man, you can score everything anyone does a one, just justify that score with an intelligent comment, not "just bad." And I was not writing you an e-mail to moan or be bad "sport," I simply want you be smart about your comments, regardless of your artistic tastes.

So:

1. If you cannot speak intelligently about your thoughts and opinions, you have no place on a site like this.

2. If you cannot defend your voting record and the comments you make, you have no place on a site like this.

3. If you cannot "be a bit more of a sport" when someone e-mails you about your thoughts, you have no place on a site like this.

In closing, I will post this in the rant section of the forum as well, so if you fell the need to further verbally chastise me for asking you to be accountable, you can do it in public."

Thanks for letting me share.

P.S.- If I'm the one being an ass here let me know, please.

This is why we have anon voting now. Tough. Give me a crappy comment like that. I'll sure email ya. I actually did email someone on Deja Vu thanking them for the profoundly insightful comment they left. (it wasn't).

well ... i don't think there is a right or wrong in this case:

He didn't say your photo sucked, he said it was bad, so you put words into his mouth. He didn't have to say anything at all, and he choose to say something which obviously offended you ... unfortunate comment? yes, but he didn't attack you personally, he just said the photo was bad. He even offered some (very little) comfort by saying sorry, probably knowing it wasn't what you were going to want to hear. Then you proceeded to scold him and tell him who is, and who is not allowed to have a "place on a site like this". Then you decided to show the whole world an arguement you just had.

Perhaps it's you that over reacted a bit. Perhaps he could have been more polite or not said anything. Perhaps you both have slightly thin skin.

Like I said ... this one could go either way ... in my opinion.

While this exchange doesn't "break" any rules, I do not think that it is very constructive.

The same could go for this thread.

Let it go. If this is the style he/she chooses to comment in, so be it. We cannot make everyone be elaborate and insightful. Likewise, by starting threads like this, it is basically calling him/her out for a public duel which will have no benefit to anyone, except to make people mad.

And mad people don't comment. And I want comments! :-P

O.K., Hopper, I think you may be right. I didn't get hot under the collar about his comment, I did get upset about his response. But, I guess I may have over reacted. I simply wanted a slightly more elaborate analysis. So, Mr. Distorted Poet, I apologize for putting words in your mouth.

In follow up, does not making an intellegent comment, upset anyone else. Or am I looing for too much?

It makes a lot of people upset. There are literally scores of threads about this very thing. Just cruise through the rant folder.

I usually get a chuckle out of comments like that, but that's just me.

In most cases I think "bad" comments without any further explanation is made for ignoring.

You´ll never get to the level of intelectual conversation with people who leave such a comments.

I can't even access any of his comments, and i don't see a comment on any of your photos by him.

It's probably being voted on right now.

Well, that "grossest photo" comment was mine, and it was meant in good fun. As, I assume (bad word choice here? LOL) was the image itself. I did give it a 7, so only 28 voters ranked it higher than I did...

Seriously, do people think that comment of mine was out of line? I have seen similar comments ("award for...in DPC history") before.

My first couple of months here I was a lot more thin-skinned and took comments more personally than I do now. I take them all in stride these days. My favorite negative comment I've received is now a source of humor for me: "you're a loser." It's apparent that the commenter was talking to me personally and not to the photograph, but I know I'm not a "loser" so I don't get all upset about it. After you've been around a while and receive lots and lots of comments, both negative and positive, you won't be quite so offended anymore. I promise!

I've been watching the challenges on here for over a year and the main reason I didn't jump into a challenge myself, until recently, is because of the potential negative comments. However, I've been pleasantly surprised by how most of the people who comment tend to give constructive criticism as opposed to just being rude.

I gotta admit I took offense to someone leaving a one word assumption of a comment on my first entry and I even started a thread asking for the definition of a "snapshot". I got past it though because *I* know that I put thought into the photo I submitted. We can't let just one or two people drag us down to their inconsiderate level.

I love reading comments on good and bad photos in all the challenges though because I find it ammusing how *everyone* sees photos differently. Some people like a certain tint, some people don't, some people want it to be softer, some want more noise. Basically it just goes to show we can't please everyone *shrugs* I, for one, *promise* I won't leave any needlessly ugly comments :)

It's great that you find humor in that comment, I would too mostly because the person who left it couldn't even spell it :P (just happened upon the comment, he spelled loser "looser") It's also gotta be pretty satisfying for you to know that you have 2 ribbons and that person has a big ZERO :)

Not that anyone specifically asked for my opinion, but here it is anyway:

Two fools don't make a right.

No, I don't think your comment was out of line. I was just saying that I've had some interesting comments on my last few - some of which COULD be taken either way, some of which are funny, and some of which are just plain unhelpful. :)

Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience

i don't think that these are any more out of line than "great", "nice" or "cool pic" - just on the opposite side of the spectrum. i do think something like "this sucks" or "bad photo" would be pretty unconstructive, but at least with the above three you know why they may not have liked it (although that's not necessarily the case, as bear pointed out and as you also acknowledged), which is quite a valid comment imho. i'm sure everyone understands this, but just wanted to bring it up again in case anyone forgets :)

Yeah i wasn't replying to whether they were out of line but whether we expected "intelligent comments." Those were 3 that I found less than photographically helpful, so I pasted them. :) I'd rather get a humorous one like bear's than "good job."
