Three versions of the same photo. Which is better and why?

My curiosity is based on comments received and read, and opinions I've seen voiced around the forums.

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

Exhibit C

[Gordon] I fixed link A to point to pic A...

I honestly can't tell any difference between A and C,but I don't care for the B version--looks drab and makes everything look burnt.

As an abstract I like the pure black and white one. Overall I like the colour one... it's all the wonderful cocoa powder - why hide the colour of chocolate? Not keen on the sepia one.

I think it's a really interesting shot - love the details and textures and shapes of it all.

Thanks Gordon--when Kavey said sepia I started to get a headache.
It came up color not sepia.

Hi Ann,

I think exhibit C, the color version, is the best. You've lost a lot of detail on A/B, specifically on the left side of the image. I think the maroons and yellows really work well together, and the textures on the image are really brought out best with the colors. Beautiful image.

I like C better simply because I can tell what I'm looking at.. when do we eat? :):):) Good shot!

I like Exhibit C the best, it has a nice warm color balance to it, and seems to bring out the textures better, btw is that a pancake?

I like C the best because it is more pleasing to the eye and seems more detailed. Defenitely looks good enough to eat.

I like the first one, because it is like "what is that?" and in the third one, "oh, it's a pancacke on a plate" My vote is for A

I like C the best and B after it.

I like C the best. In fact, I think C is a prett nice pictire altogether. I think the black and white version robs the photo of a lot of detail. For example, compare the texture in the upper left-hand corner on the underside of the pastry: it's burned in too much in the blacka nd white and you lose it. Also, I think you lose so much of the photo's balance when you changed it to black and white. In this picture, much of the balance is created by the colors. Sometimes, switching to black and white adds someting to the photo. In this case, I think it detracts. As for the sepia-toned one, I have to say I don't care for it at all. It makes the image flat. MHO. Great job on the photo's composition. I like the repetition of form.

Pretend I didn't make those blatant typos in that post. ;-)

Another vote for C.
It looks much softer and therefore more appetising.

my votes for c :)

Hee! Of all the comments I thought you might make - that wasn't one of them.

Thanks tho :)

The comments so far have been pretty interesting - I'm going to leave my more detailed thoughts for a bit - see what other comments are made.

Very interesting stuff... educational too :)

I prefer the color in this case. However I think the B&W and duotone would be improved (though perhaps still not to the level of the color) by reducing the contrast. In most B&W work I think high contrast is the way to go, but I think this is one of those cases where a softer contrast works better.

For example:

Oooh that's nice! Much softer...

I like version B most. The color version is just too colourful and the black&white is too dark.
I also like the version puppet10 posted. The softness fits to the fuzzy fore- and backgrund due to the narrow DOF.

I agree.. a softer contrast helps to blend the extreme depth of field very well.

The softer contrast actually raises the photo into magazine quality work.

I vote A, but I like abstraction, high contrast, and darkness. C would score higher at DPC.

I really like this version - the soft contrast works really well with
the chocolate colours
