I think *both* a way to send e-mail to undisclosed addresses and a way to reply to a comment in-line would be useful and educational, but being able to send a reply directly to an individual doesn't allow for a public response to comments. This is what I envision:

good compsition. subject matter is a bit banal.

- Thank you, and you're right. I have a bad habit of
obsessing over ordinary objects!

WaltPalmer - 3/1/2002 [reply]
Better as a square cropped from the bottom. Eliminate that extra plant, then I really like this!! Except macro should be much closer than this I think.

- After I submitted this photo I relized I should have
plucked that small, crummy looking plant from the shot.
My mother made the same comment! It would really improve
the picture, I think. I tried cropping it like you
suggested, but I really missed the out-of focus slant
of the crack in the concrete.

roderick - 3/1/2002 [reply]
This is not a macro shot!

- Those plants are about half an inch tall... the whole
scene is a crack in my driveway! Just because it has a
fore, middle, and background doesn't mean it's not macro!

-----

This way people could see not only the original comment, but if the photographer agrees with it and anything else they may have to add.

To sum up my answer your question, Reuben, a way to reply to undisclosed addresses is a good thing, but it might keep useful dialogue out of the public eye. I'd rather a way to type in a quick response that will be saved for everyone to see.

Here is our dilemma without an apparent solution.

If we allow a photographer to reply to his comments during voting in a format similar to what Mousie suggested, it won't matter at all. The public can't see comments until the challenge results are posted -- and this part cannot change. We can't allow others' comments to influence voting.

If we tell our users to e-mail or private-message comments, this might infringe on the commenting user. If I comment on 20 images (in an attempt to provide some feedback to the photographer), I don't want 20 e-mails responding to my comments. Hell, I don't want 10 e-mails for it. And I don't want an e-mail that says "Thanks... I thought so too." Sorry if I've gone bitter over it, but I get more than my share of e-mails in a day.

The private messaging system will be in place very soon, but it can't be abused by our users to reply to all of their comments. The private messaging system will in fact just be an undisclosed e-mail system, to continue to allow you your privacy if desired.

Now, I hate dumb comments just as much as the next guy. But if I tell you I thought your picture was too dark, I don't want you to e-mail me telling me to adjust my gamma settings. Even more of an issue -- I don't want you to try to convince me to change my vote.

It seems to me that a general reply (or multiple replies) from the photographer after the challenge is over is sufficient. Add that to an e-mail/private message system used discretely ... and is our problem fixed?

Welll, lets see, we haven't picked on Langdon much this week.......

To clarify, my idea was to have the all the comments and their replies available to everyone after voting finishes, not as a mechanism to influence votes. I'd be happy with a way to reply to each comment individually even if it was completely *after* voting, just so I wouldn't have to organize a multitude of responses to short comments in a single, confusing, gigantic reply... and so that everyone could see them right under the picture and the comment that's discussing it. I would hope that this simple comment/response system would actually *decrease* the urge to send an e-mail, for whatever reason!

Drew says "If we allow a photographer to reply to his comments during voting in a format similar to what Mousie suggested, it won't matter at all." but I disagree. If we immediately show the single response to the person who made the comment, say a request for more detailed instructions or a definition of an unknown term, they can change what they wrote accordingly and everyone will see it once the voting stops and the stats pages go online. That's probably the one time people will actually go through some of the pictures and read the coments anyway, unless it's the photogtrapher, who will keep checking back on their photo like a crack addicted monkey pushing a lever.

We love you, Drew! :)

Ouch! That's hitting a little close to home.

Mousie: sorry, bad thought/sentence construction on my part ... what I meant to say (which wasn't even correct after you clarified the timing of your suggested scheme) was that it wouldn't matter if you replied to comments as they're made because they wouldn't be public until voting was over anyway. That make sense?

I think we're with you on everything, though my last personal hold-back (if that's a word) is the method to "immediately show the single response to the person who made the comment". Not sure where we'd do this, as I wouldn't want it to be another thing cluttering up the home page. But Lang and I will talk tomorrow about it and figure something out :)

We've got some really cool stuff coming up for the site, so just keep rolling with us on the changes / additions :)
