Wow!!! one the first page of voting fot the bridge challenge i already see tons of really great shots. Im thinking theres going to be alot of high scores.
It is really cool to see so many really great shots in a challenge.
I hope everyone has as much fun voting as i am. Even though it will probably take me all week to finish voting.

It's almost like seeing your part of the world. Great shots!! I wish we had cool bridges here in our town.

I'm kind of surprised there aren't more 'clever' shots of other types of bridge. it's going to be difficult to decide this week.

I have only seen a few so far, but I think the references might be too obscure for people to understand. Some of the uses of "bridge" are just part of the specialist lingo:

- Bridging hubs and switches in network architecture
- A musical bridge, a pause in a song (often a musical interlude or drum fill), or an instrumental solo can be a bridge
- The command center of a ship
- A partially fixed tooth (a bridge keeps the distance between teeth when one if missing, if I am not mistaken)
- The part which lifts the strings of a guitar or other string instruments (double bass, violin etc) up from the fretboard on the guitar body is called a bridge
- A way to hold your billiards and / or pool cue
- A game of cards
- A tool used to keep a wristwatch suspended so you can work on it
- I think bridges can also be used for crossing rivers etc :)

.. There are probably a dozen more.

There are some very nice shots, but I've been really surprised that so many are out of focus for no good reason. I can understand soft focus and the like (and there are several good examples of this this week), but there are a lot of images this week that are just downright blurry. Too bad, too, since often the light, colors lines and contrasts are perfect. Still, some very nice shots here! I'm having fun voting.

Perhaps a focus on the sky with a wide aperture?
And camera shake of course. With these deep distances and high F numbers you really need a solid base like a tripod to get the best out of the camera. Even worse when you use the tele-end of the lens.

edit 2: And I noticed several poorly compressed images. 640x480 @40kb and less. No wonder it looks soft.

I took more than 60 photos of my bridge. I'd say 45 of those were on a tripod. The one I selected was off the tripod. Anyway, I messed around with my photostitch software and have a couple cool panoramics that I will put in my portfolio once the challenges is over.

Anyway, what's focus got to do with anything? I submitted what seemed to me to be one of few properly exposed an in focus eggs last week, and about 20 people voted it 3 or less.

I thought there were some great shots of the bridges. I noticed that there weren't many clever shots, but I enjoy looking at the pictouresque photos anyway.

Anthony.

BTW Ed, the link to your homesite seems to be a broken one.

Thanks Anthony, I shall do something about it!

Oops - file extension error. Should be correct now :-)

I agree - and I'm surprised not to see more of the other types of bridges mentioned by SharQ (I had mentioned a couple of those in previous threads). I am, however, still waiting for some voters to vote a bit more fairly. Then again, it's just monday, and the voters usually get a bit more fair as the week progresses.

and another thing, it is more fun voting on the bridges than it was voting on the eggs!!!!

I had a few 'clever' shots of bridges, but I wasn't able to get any of them by the time to challenge expired. The one I really wanted to submit was a horizontal composition of a collapsed bridge, titled "Abridged", but unfortunately the trails to it were all snowed over, or flooded. As soon as conditions improve I might go back out and take the picture anyway.

yes. bridges are better than eggs. i don't own a good tripod yet (but it's on the way!). Then I'll get 8's all the time I'm sure. :)

Well, I think I reached a milestone on DPC - I got my first really useful comments today. I can't, of course, go into detail because that would give my bridge away, but suffice it to say that it gives me information I previously did not know, and will definitely help me when editing my photos.

how can I view any comments that have been left on my bridge? Am I missing something, or has it just not gotten any comments? ;)
03/13/2003 12:14:32 PM · #19
If you have comments on your photo, the number/quantity will be listed with your score on your DPC home page. You can click on that number (or the score) and you'll see all of your comments. Only if it says 'Comments=0' do you have no comments, to my knowledge.

Hows everyone doing with this challenge ... high scores or low... need to do the voting tonight ...
03/13/2003 02:24:46 PM · #21
Mine started high but has been going down down down.
03/13/2003 02:46:35 PM · #22
Thought I was going to crack the 6 barrier, but it's going to need quite a late rally to get back up there. At least I know what people didn't like about this one!
03/13/2003 02:59:37 PM · #23
Mine's been on a roller coaster ride. Up, down, up, down... I've got motion sickness just from watching it!
03/13/2003 03:00:54 PM · #24
Mines been doing great all week. One of my best scores.
03/13/2003 03:41:19 PM · #25
I like what mbardeen said: roller coaster ride. I have noticed that late at night, the score dips and mid-morning, it goes up a bit. Late night blurrs? Bad attitudes after putting feisty kids to bed?
