let me make sure i have this straight.... a 50mm 1.4 on a D70, is in essence really an 80mm 1.4? is that right>?

75mm f/1.4. The D70 has a 1.5x crop factor.

The Nikkor 50mm 1.8 is a highly regarded lens and 1/3rd the price of the 1.4

You could take the extra $200 saved and put it towards another lens that you may decide you also have to have.

The focal length refers to the distance from the focal plane to the optical centre of the lens. A 50mm lens will always be a 50mm lens no matter what lens mount it is on.

However, the field of view will be different depending on the lens mount specification and sensor size. A 50mm on 35mm film format will be a normal lens, but that same lens on the Olympus 4/3 mount will be a short telephoto. Similarly, put a 50mm lens on an APS-sized sensor like the Nikon D70 or Canon 20D and it will be a short telephoto too.

However, since most photographers are more familiar with the 35mm format, we often refer to 35mm as a reference point as it is much easier to relate.

Therefore, to be politically correct, a 50mm lens on the D70 will be equivalent to an 75mm lens in 35mm-equivalent terms.

i second that comment about the 50/1.8 ... you can buy it as cheap as $89 online, brand new. it's an unbelievably great lense. don't know that i would justify the extra money for the 1.4 myself, but some people do.

I got mine off of ebay. I spent a little more than retail, but since you can't find it retail, it was worth getting. Just search for ML-L3 and you'll find a bunch.

Tripod mounted w/out flash, shooting candle light, will produce amazing blues, greens, and golds. This is a wonderful low light lens, providing great atmosphere to your shots.
