Thinking about upcoming tax returns and long lenses, I can possibly afford one of the two lenses listed or something comparable. I like to shoot sports and nature, need at least 200-300 for that, mostly daytime so lens speed doesn't have to be F4 or 2.8 (besides that's expensive), and want a bit more optical quality than my 70-300 Nikon G lens. Any ideas, feeback, reviews or opinions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas to all. BTW, shooting a D70 mostly right now.

Thanks!

I shoot both the D100 and the D70 and have the 50-500 sigma. I have shot many rodeo playdays with it and like it quite a bit. I also took it to Alaska and shot my 'Road to Denali' shot with it. My biggest objection with it is that it lacks some in contrast compared to my Nikkor lenses. They being said, I usually just bump the contrast in the camera, or in post processing to compensate for it.

Here's a link to some rodeo pics with it.

I've not used the 80-400, so I can't offer any input on it.

What, no team ropers? I browsed through that link for 10 minutes and no team roping! Show me a pic of a heeler just after the throw with the header in the foreground/background. C'mon, you have that shot, right? ;)
