Well, 3 of us got together and went to Phipps conservatory today. It was a real blast. In attendance was dentman, lykofos, and myself.

Here's a few I have uploaded so far...

Sorry I missed it. About to go to work...at least it looked warm there!

Oh it was warm inside. That's ok, there will be more times for you to come. It was cold outside trying to find which entrance was open lol.

Here's another from today...

Well, out of curiosity and because I love driving in the snow (mostly the latter), I went to wal-mart and had 4x6's printed of 4 of the shots -- the one turned out really good but the others seemed to lose a lot of color information and there's a couple places that are really close to blown out in the prints that aren't on the computer.

I might just have to try the same ones at Target to see what the difference is.

outside, yes. Not sure what that looks like now though.
In side they have many rooms...i think they have a small waterfall..i know they have ponds. The temp exhibit changes - this time of year it is a G scale train layout.

I have not had that problem...could be any number of things. In PS take measurements with the eye dropper and see what is actually there.
The machine may be off, calibration wise.
The person running the machine hmay have tried to adjust things.
I use the walmart in Center Twp and have given them TIFF files of 17mb. and 1mp catpures, cropped in jpb format. (100k files size). I have tried sepia, selective desat, etc. I have had no problems. Well, beyond my own issues and trials (DO NOT oversharpen! Yuk)

You may have to experiment - take an image and add a clor bar or grayscale bar and have it printed so you can 'calibrate' yourself to their machine. I know when i did color pics for wet web (newsprint) i was told by the printer to go into Levels and crank the midpoint to 1.47 after setting the white and black points - has to do with ink saturation in hte paper. Also, had to do that in CMYK mode, as that is what they used. Doing it in RGB and converting it after screwed the pooch. B&W images used less Mid point correct, about 1.25 if i recall.

hey Dave - got any more pics from sunday? post 'em bro! the ones you have so far look great man.

as for the printing... I too have run into lots of problems getting the image off screen. is your camera shooting adobe or sRGB? Check out drycreekphoto.com in there you'll find more about color profiles, monitor calibration etc than you ever wanted to know. For now, when you print at wal mart(I prefer sams as they use fuji crystal archive paper and a cmyk ink) make sure to ask them to turn OFF the color correction before printing. this will add alot of life to your photos BTW sams is 18 cents per 4x6 no waiting :)

I actually prefer target as I seem to get the best results there. I only went to walmart because target photo closed at 5:00 PM on sunday.

Any more photos? hrmm...I could probably muster up one or two more outta the bunch but those ones I put up on pbase //www.pbase.com/dpaull/ were the best of the bunch.

Next time we go back, I'm going to bring a black towel or something to put behind the flower heh. I thought of maybe bringing a spray bottle too, to get some water drops on them, but not too sure if the staff would like customers spraying unidentified liquids on their flowers.

Actually, I think I'd rather just go to the place where those things grow in the wild and snap some shots there hahaha.

I never wanted to travel before I got into photography -- now, you name the place/country/whatever, and 99% of the time I'd want to go there -- there are photo ops everywhere.

Hey, a new use for fellow DPC'rs - towel holders!
I suppose we shoudl have one of use get and a bring a reflector too. That is on my list for late next spring..then i might try human models.

I work with a girl that would probably model - she is some kind of body builder / bikini team member/competitor. She does some amatrue modling for somebody - she brought in pics once. No nudes though...

heh...so 4 people is all we need. Two to hold the towel, one to spray some mist on the flower, and one to shoot the pictures -- and we can rotate in a clockwise fashion. heh.

I think I'm all flowered out for a while -- flowers are nice, but there's just something that doesn't feel right about a group of guys going to look at flowers on their days off to me. :-D

It'd be okay if we were British.

Today, the Carnegie Museum sounds appealing. Lots of things there...too many probably.

I just noticed this post! Here I the photos that I finally got around to processing: //www.lykofos.com/photography/phipps/

As far as prints go, I take any test/experiment shots I want printed to wal-mart. Anything I plan on keeping, I take to Ritz Camera. The difference in processing/paper quality is amazing. Ritz is a little more $ obviously, but well worth it.
