Hi all,

I recently met Alionic for a photo shoot out at the Chiba Zoo and took a few fun bird photos there that I wanted to share with everyone. I also wanted to say thanks again to Spike for another fun day shooting in Japan. Thanks, Spike!

I like #2 Very sharp and DOF shallow enough to blur the whole background

Nice pictures Phillip. I like the 3rd one best. The color are very nice in it.
I am curious since you live in Toyko if you have ever been to Okinawa? I am also curious if anyone here is from there? We lived there for 8 years (from 1990-1998) and would love to talk with someone who lives there. We are planning on going back for a visit in the next year or so.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind comments!

Bren - I have never been to Okinawa, but would love to visit there one day. It's pretty far from Tokyo. We lived in Yamanashi Prefecture (the north side of Mount Fuji) from 1991-1994. Then we returned to the States and have been living in Yamanashi and then Tokyo for the past year and a half. Let me know when you make plans to return. :-)

Philip nice shots!

Here are a couple "Love Birds" I shot at the Texas State Fair in the bird exhibit they had. This version is just a quick processing I did. I have a better version but I did not save a web copy of it:

While one was chatting and smiling for the camera the other decided to eat the food :)

I think it's about a 2 and a half hour flight or so. It's well worth going to though. We loved it there. It was like being on a 8 year tropical vacation. The beaches are beautiful there. My husband was stationed there and if I could have moved my family there, I would have lived there the rest of my life. :) I was not into photography that much during our stay and I want to go back to take pictures.:) I will for sure let you know once we decide when we are going back.

Hey Marac - Yeah, I ran by the bird area on my way out since I really liked that shot you took. Those were the best shots I got that day. The rest of my pics came out pretty bad because my zoom lens is so soft at the upper end. (Note to Santa...) Your ape shots came out really well, though.

And I'd love to hook up with other Japan photographers. I'll look for a nice event or area to shoot between Tokyo and Tochigi-ken, and please let me know if you find anything good or set up a date with anyone else as well. Thanks!

And that's a great bird shot, Robin. The colors are really great!

Nice shots, Phil. I notice your goldfish boys in your port. How did you go with the JT comp?
I'm actually going in to Tokyo today for shopping (will take camera too, of course).

Hi David - Yes, I put the contest photo back in my portfolio because the photos were supposed to be public as of yesterday. Unfortunately, the Japan Times web site hasn't posted the new contest page yet, so the page still says that voting will egin yesterday. I'll post a note when the contest voting page goes live.

That's great that you'll be making it into Tokyo. Be sure to stop by the huge Christmas lights display outside the south exit of Shinjuku Station (at least that's where it was last year - leading up to the new Kinokuniya, I believe) or the one in Roppongi Hills. They make great night shots, if you're going to be around that long. If you ever want to hook up in Tokyo when you're in town, just let me know in advance and I'll try to come out and meet you. Happy shopping/shooting!
