Hi folks... looking for some advise from folks who use point and shoot compacts-- my mom is looking for a new one and her main criteria is ease of use/ intuitive functionality (and under $800). any thoughts? she's been pretty happy with an old Sony Mavica, but needs something a little nicer now, and I think she really digs the whole movie thing too... i've been sifting through DPReview a little, but am overwhelmed by the number of cameras that are out there now. thanks a million!

There will be lots of different recommendations, probably just as many recommendations as comments ;-)

Heres mine : Canon Powershot S50,60 or 70 - tremendous little camera, drops into a pocket easily enough, but has manual and pointy shooty settings too.

I fully endorse the Kodak Easyshare line, but as Falc noted, these will be as amny opinions as there are people! Best of luck whatever you and she decide to do.

With $800 to spend, the field is wide open!
I did a lot of research over the last few months since I planned to purchase 3 digicams as Christmas gifts, here are my thoughts:

Sony Cybershots:
small, pretty user friendly,
quality photos, I'm not crazy about the limited optical zoom range.

Canon:
Powershots are great, still not crazy about mostly limited optical zoom range.
I like the S1 IS since it has the 10x optical zoom, but it's a bulky little thing.

Nikon Coolpix:
I like the size and the quality of images. Limited optical zoom again (at least in the lower priced models that I looked at), but I will say that I ended up buying 2 of these because of the under $200 price range.

Olympus:
I REALLY like the 10x optical zoom range of the c-725,740, 750, etc.. they are nice little cameraa, I know several people who own these and they love them.

Well, I could go on and on, but others will jump in with their thoughts. It's mostly going to depend upon what your looking for as far as printing needs (megapixels), zoom capabilities, size (does she want something ultra tiny, or something more like a 35mm?)

Good Luck!

Kodak DX-6490 or DX-7590 for sure. Fabulous cameras, movie mode is terrific, I can't complain at all! :o)
