I've learned that when a DPC member starts to design a new web site, it's mandatory to go through this process:

1. Put something together.
2. See how much everyone at DPC hates it.

Although I've only just begun with a home page idea, I thought I'd move to Step 2 to get some feedback :)

There's nothing set up for inside pages, so don't dare click the links... but I'd be interested in hearing thoughts from folks about the overall design before I move into the inside stuff...

Thought it would be helpful to include the link:

www.thefreeds.com/multimedia

Thanks in advance!

Looks absolutely great! I'm in the process of building my web site too. I really like your home page. It looks very, very professional! Good stuff!

how are you planning to tie the content in with the splash page?
it looks good, but i would say the text is awful large, and would be a bit annoying on a smaller res display.

BTW - what was the answer to your blank image issue?

I like it! It's very simple layout but effective in my mind. Websites now a day want to do so much with the designs and layouts and it just confuse the user. You have a very neat layout, simple and to the point.

Good Job, looks great!

PS: I couldn't resist, I had to click on the links.... ;-)

Oh, I know you are not done yet... but so you remember when you're done with it... need to create new error pages for 404, 40X... Right now it comes up with the error page for your www.thefreeds.com site ... just a FYI

Splash page is looking good though I'd recommend having the photos blend a little more.

Edit: needs a smaller font as mentioned before

Is everyone working on their web site today? Why aren't we holiday shopping for camera goodies or better yet out taking photos? Anyway got mine back up today, but like alansfreed little content yet.
Opinions welcomed.
Anyway here it is...

I'm not going to blow smoke up your hiney...I think it needs work. The background is the most glaring problem. It does not mesh well with your simplistic page design and color scheme. Also, the color scheme is a little bizarre, with yellow links becoming brighter yellow (i.e. Contact) but also White links becoming yellow. I'd make it consistent.

I like the choice of font for the link text, but I have to question the lack of any visual indications of "clickability". I know that It's easy to figure what things are links and what aren't on such a simple page, but as your site grows you may to have header elements with the same look and feel as the links, but they will also look like hyperlinks!

If you are going to connect a picture with a logical area of your site, you damn well better make it clickable as well as the text next to it. In fact, if you are going to keep the mouse-over effect on the links, I'd include the images in the "highlight" so that you know what goes with what. It seems overkill, but anything that helps my eyes, helps my brain.

Lastly, while simplicity is good don't avoid telling users about your web site on the first page. It ensures the user that they have arrived at the correct website. Example: Freed Multimedia is culmination of the talents of Mr. Alan S Freed. Alan is a photographer, designer, and yada yada. This blurb also helps web search engines properly cache your page results with relevant search criteria.

Okey dokey... I'll shrink the font a tad...

As for the blank image problem, I had the camera looked at by some Nikon folks, and they cleaned the battery contacts. Viola...! That was apparently the problem, since I've taken a couple thousand photos since then without an issue! Phew!

All good points... I'll take 'em into consideration.

which version of flash?

is it scripted, or tweened?

12/03/2004 12:38:33 PM · #22
Alan, with your bottom text links, I think you should use a CSS mouseover effect because at the moment they seem a little static, especially since everything else has mouseover effects. The same goes for your other site at thefreeds.com. Try something like this:

a:link { font-weight: normal; color: #666666; text-decoration: none }
a:visited { font-weight: normal; color: #666666; text-decoration: none }
a:hover { font-weight: normal; color: #ffffff; text-decoration: underline }
a:active { font-weight: normal; color: #ffffff; text-decoration: none }

You can adjust the colours and stuff easily enough, just bung it in your main.css file. I like links to not be underlined, but just to be a lighter or darker colour, which then changes and underlines on mouseover, as I think it looks a bit more professional. The worst types of links to have are blue underlines ones in my opinion, like the one saying 'Amy' on thefreeds.com :)

I have broadband and the home page loaded slowly. How large is this file? Think about having it load quicker.

Hey! - It's very well done - professional.

Yup... that was actually on my to-do list :)

to add to this you can also class the links, so other text links don't follow the same exact same rules. unless that's what you want

a:link.btmnav { font-weight: normal; color: #666666; text-decoration: none }
a:visited.btmnav { font-weight: normal; color: #666666; text-decoration: none }
a:hover.btmnav { font-weight: normal; color: #ffffff; text-decoration: underline }
a:active.btmnav { font-weight: normal; color: #ffffff; text-decoration: none }

then your actual anchors would look like this
LINK TEXT
