However, the state slogan "Virginia is for Lovers" is a whole lot more recognizable and at least to me makes for a better photographic scenario than the official motto.

As of right now, we are limiting it to state motto just so we have a place to start. You don't need to come up with ideas off the top of your head as the timeframe will most likely span several months. The problem with doing state slogans is the fact that not every state has a slogan.

You can combine them into one image : )

Okay everyone... we've reached the half-way mark with 25 out of the 50 states represented! Great job so far --- we're almost there! If you know anyone in the states not represented in my first post, then let them know about it! Thanks a lot to everyone who has already signed up, we're looking forward to this being a great project!

If you are still interested in the project, please post to the thread even if your state has someone listed. Most all of us have participated in a group project at one time or another. Y'all know what happens- someone drops out and leaves the rest of the group hanging. :)

Similar to the other two colab projects- the goal here is a poster sized image with 50 photos from photographers in all 50 US states. Each photographer will be permitted to sell/distribute this image in an unmodified format. So y'all don't try suing me, you will be asked to sign a release granting the right for the image to be distributed.

This project will take several months to complete. Please, please keep that in mind as you sign up. :)

Since my San Diego Neighbor BradP is out, do we not have a CA volunteer yet??????

I thought we'd at least have to split CA or something...only two people are from CA in here? wow!

I didn't find one...I'd like to volunteer for CA!

Illinois (if you can use an Illini)! Hmmmm, haven't a clue what the state motto is. I'm going to look it up right now whether I get selected or not!

We have you as the first spot for Illinois.
State Motto of Illinois: State sovereignty, national union.

We are thinking about expanding the theme to state mottos/slogans.

"State Sovereignty, National Union." My, do we sound like an uppity state!?

I'm in Connecticut.

IL slogan - "Land of Lincoln" - like that much better than the motto, but hey I can do uppity, I mean sovereignty if that's what it takes.

That was my first thought for Illinois state motto! The nickname would be much easier.

Whew! I'm saved.

State Motto
The Greek word "Eureka" has appeared on the state seal since 1849 and means "I have found it". The words were probably intended to refer to the discovery of gold in California. Archimedes, the famed Greek mathematician, is said to have exclaimed "Eureka!" when, after long study, he discovered a method of determining the purity of gold. In 1957, attempts were made to establish "In God We Trust" as the state motto, but "Eureka" was made the official state motto in 1963.

In addition to our motto being made famous by a scientist running naked through the streets (sounds pretty much like where I live now), the University of California's motto is pretty good too, Fiat Lux or "Let There Be Light"

California (and probably other states too) has a lot of "Official State Stuff" -- plenty of fodder for future state-themed projects : )

The Greek word "Eureka" ....

Yeah, I'm now trying to think of a submission that does not include naked men or gold :)

this might be more difficult than I thought. I should have just kept my big mouth shut!
