"a photograph of an object representing that letter"

Do you want a strictly literal representation of the letter, or is it up to the photographers to decide what will represent their assigned letter? IOW, should the photo contain an object in the shape of the letter, or would a photo of a unicorn work for the letter "U"?

I would prefer subject choices that start with the letter you have instead of photographing the letter itself.

Sounds good to me. Now all I have to do is find a unicorn and get it to strike a pose. :)

I'm beginning to think John has something against thatcloudthere...I was the first responder bumped from the 1st one, now I've got the only letter that was invented for the sole purpose of setting record high scores in Scrabble.

A photographer in a recent issue of Lenswork, that features portfolios of B&W photographs, created a set of 26 images - one for each letter. Although his wasn't a collage, it may be instructive for participants in John's project to check this out for ideas. It was quite impressive.

(I'm at work, but will post more info, incl. issue #/date, later, ..if anyone's interested..)

I didn't get a chance last night to research which issue of LensWork (but will tonight...). Basically, what this photographer did was find and photograph naturally occurring objects or shapes that clearly reminded one of a particular letter of the alphabet. The LensWork issue printed each of the 26 photo (taken in black & white). It was quite fascinating.

...Which brings up a question: John, other than the size and theme of the image, are there any other constraints? Since this is a single poster, for instance, should all photos be color or b&w, or can we mix?

That is absolutely stunning!

I should hang out at pbase more often!

*whiny voice* John...are you sure you don't want to capture the shape of the letter, rather than a xylophone or x-ray?

If not, that's cool...

No, I'm just kidding...I'm actually looking forward to the challenge (and thanks for the invite!)...

...but did you see that link, I think it looks cool.

Here's another one from the same photographer using colo(u)r photos (some are the same, some are different).

Thanks, Kiwi! This is the photographer I mentioned in my post. He did a fantastic job with this. If you can get a back issue of LensWork (#54), it's even more impressive in print.

I'm going to try a project like that...I really think it will help me improve my vision for lines/shapes and contrast. That will be my 2005 project, methinks...
