My first impression of the new challenge: There's little room for creativity. Certainly it's there, and there is still room for technical ability. For the most part, though, I am afraid this challenge will just be a competition to search out the neatest looking architecture.

I hope everybody realizes that architecture is not restricted to buildings. This realization might help those of us who are less creative find something to shoot. Here are the Merriam-Webster definitions of the words "archtiecture" and and "architectural":

Architecture

1 : the art or science of building; specifically : the art or practice of designing and building structures and especially habitable ones
2 a : formation or construction as or as if as the result of conscious act <the architecture of the garden> b : a unifying or coherent form or structure <the novel lacks architecture>
3 : architectural product or work
4 : a method or style of building
5 : the manner in which the components of a computer or computer system are organized and integrated

Architechural

1 : of or relating to architecture : conforming to the rules of architecture
2 : having or conceived of as having a single unified overall design, form, or structure

Yeah, I'm in a beach town right now for Spring Break, so it's going to be a pain to find some really striking architecture....

And what's with the "must be shot this week" bit? I thought that just the night shot might be like that, but I think we should be able to put up previously shot photos. Since a week is a little bit short (but I like it that short, I might add) I think that we should not be limited to that amount of time. Because then it not only prevents us from showing some of our old work, but it also can force us to use shots that aren't as good as ones that are in our portfolio.

I like the challenge this brings. It also allows those new to this to be on more even ground to those that may have years of photos to choose from.

Yes what is with that bit? Why don't we simply change the rules so that it is the standard? Then you can make a note when you want to change it for a challenge.

I like the "this week" rule and hope it stays.

Oh to have a lovely beach town to shoot for this. What sort of archeticture do you suppose horses build?

Two points in response to Reuben:

Professional photography is often about going to great lengths just to find the right setting. So even if it turned out to be a simple building hunt, I think it's fair to say that this challenge is still a good representation of photography as an art form.

You make a very good point, that architecture does not mean "a building". Computers have architectures, and so does software. A spider's web or a bird's nest or an anthill IS architecture. So is a house of cards! You've contradicted yourself here, saying that there's little room for creativity and then immediately throwing open the doors to an endless supply of it. :) If everyone winds up taking a bunch of building shots it's not the fault of the challenge, it's the fault of the photographers. Hopefully we've planted some seeds here and people will let loose.

Still, I'm worried that anything without a building in it will get low votes. I'm not going to let that stop me, though! If my best picture doesn't have a single brick or board in it I'm going to submit it anyway.

This was actually the plan from the very beginning, but we knew that starting out, it would be hard to get enough submissions. This isn't a problem anymore. Look for it to become a standard.

As for 1 week being a tight deadline -- I agree. And a feature we very much need to put in place is the one-week-look-ahead feature. That is, you can see one challenge in advance, while still only being able to submit for one at a time.

I'm still in a tizzy figuring out how I'm going to shoot architecture using a mirror and my outstretched arm... ;-)

Make sure it's very obviously macro, or I'll mark you down!

There doesn't need to be any noise. No, that's automatic deduction!

seriously, why don't we try to narrow down the definition of architecture so this doesn't turn into a bad week of photos.

Hey! The 'this week' thing is kinda hard when the wind chill is nine degrees (in March, no less.) I know what you're thinking. . .piss and moan, that's why it's a challenge. . .

I guess I'll have to go indoors? (Dang, there goes my secret.)

conceptgraphics, i feel ya :) the weather around these parts often has the temp around 0 F, before wind chill. but oh - do we ever have a wind chill! after about 20 minutes of shooting, my hands hurt so bad and my camera zoom lens doesn't respond so well :) ANY outdoor shooting is a challenge at this point :)
