DPL - the DPC League - is returning!
Not sure what “DPL” is all about? You can learn more here, but in short, it’s an opportunity to team up with fellow photographers to learn, discuss photography, receive honest feedback, and compete together for virtual glory.
This year we’re trying a different approach to team formation. To participate, simply register here. During registration, you may specify other photographers you would like to team up with, and the system will try to satisfy as many requests as possible. Please read more complete details in the DPL FAQ.
The planned schedule for this season is:
* 2026-05-24 → 2026-06-13 - Registration period (3 weeks)
* 2026-06-14 → 2026-06-20 - Teams announced, team internal discussions begin, names and logos chosen
* 2026-06-21 - The games begin!
As in the previous season, both the Monday Member Challenges and the Wednesday Open Challenges will count toward team scores. Members may contribute scores from up to two challenges each week, with their best results counting toward the team score, while non-members will have one scoring challenge per week.
Dedicated team threads will be available throughout the season so teammates can share ideas, discuss entries, and offer constructive feedback. Used well, this can be one of the best learning opportunities the site has to offer.
To improve the user experience, you can now quickly attach images while composing messages to share them with your team (look for the last button in the message composition box).
To help keep the competition balanced and fair, a team Skill Cap (maximum Avg Placement Percent per team) will again be used. The cap for this season is set to 60%, similar to DPL-6.
We also encourage all participants to remain active voters throughout DPL. Community participation is what makes this event successful and fun for everyone.
So let’s bring the wayward DPCers back into the fold and have some fun this summer! |

How many participants is the minimum total for this to "fly"?
ETA I'm sure I could read carefully and do the math, but I'm lazy. Humor me, please :)

Last season we had 12 teams of 7 people each = 84
We do need an even number of teams but the # of members per team could conceivably vary. |

A quick note: if you named a photographer you would like to team up with, please encourage them to register as well. Team-up requests can only be considered if both photographers are registered for DPL.

Hi folks,
Try out the new season in a new format! Pick your partners (or not). Be a captain (or not). But you have to be in it to win it. Come one, come all. Don't miss out - please register today! |

Hi Margaret. Pretty sure that was hashed out in the DPL6 Feedback / DPL7 Suggestions forum thread. You should find your answer there (please). Thanks. |

Margaret,
I'm sure I speak for all DPC management when I say we are hoping to see EVERYONE participate this season.
There are many past DPL members who haven't weighed in yet, even you! |

Question - will this actually get a green light if we have 4 members per team - I don’t see why not - more is better, that being said - I’d rather just play what ever the division is by 12. Right now we are @ 4.33 per team. |

There are 52 people signed up right now.
Do we have to have 12 teams?
I hope not.
Let's have a chance to get to know others that we don't know.
The more the merrier!

As I understand it - the DPL coding is based on 12 teams - therefore a division of 12 |

Which is too bad as tournament brackets tend to work most smoothly with multiples of 8 (i.e. 8 or 16). |

I’m fine with “what ever division by equally” - yes larger teams are nice but I’d rather play vs not if we don’t have x amount for 12 teams.

Unfortunately timing is bad for me. Not sure I will be able to participate. |

So, how are the teams being created? |

After rigorous analysis, teams will be assigned using a proprietary algorithm weighing each candidate’s creative vision, technical skill, competitive temperament, and shoe size. The graphic above illustrates the algorithm in action. (actually, I do not know, but that is what I imagine.) |

About the DPL - Teams Questions
Although. :-) Not sure that there really isn't some magic voodoo going on. Here's the Q/A for the Random Team fill.
"Q: How does the Random Fill work?
A: It isn't purely random chaos. The system assigns remaining members to teams specifically to keep the team under the Skill Cap. It tries to balance the league so every team has a fighting chance."
