The holidays get stressful to those who lose sight of the true meanings of them. We need to keep things in perspective.
However you interpret holidays, and whatever country you're in, a photo contest is just a photo contest. The contest has nothing to do with what you celebrate, nor where you live.
I'm deeply touched by the upcoming holidays. I'm bummed by my recent scores. Oh well. I can handle both!

In Canada they celebrate a holiday called 'Boxing Day', I believe on December 26. Just out of curiosity, what is 'Boxing Day'?

I still love the site very much! Then again, I stay out of the forums as much as possible.

Good one. I don't understand how this thread started, I mean this site is going more and more popular with time, just check at the number of entries. To me, that's what matters. If you don't like comments for example, just don't read it.

I don't like this at all. My understanding of that rant is "this site is now opened to average people and I don't like it"... Correct me if I'm wrong PLEASE...

The main object of the forum is to explore ideas. Mankind is so adept at creating order out of chaos, so it thinks, and is very quick to reduce complex principles into one liners known as truisms. Hence, the "Golden Rule."

The only problem is that many of these gems become more like bumper stickers. That is, they are duly noted but not really believed in or made part of the living experience, except by those souls of good will.

So, we enter a forum to explore an idea and some folks have such strong opinions with bad manners to match and very little goodwill. Problem.

We enter at our own risk but wouldn't it be nice if we could keep the social barbarians out. They are affected by the conjuction of the planets and the moon phases and the last mistake they made. They usually leave their keys in the car, trip over familiar areas and forget to pay their bills and are always putting their foot in their mouth. They also suffer from a flurry of temper syndrones.

Of course you can police the forums but does this not usually lead to more anger and more display of defiance. I think as a starter that forum abuse button is a great idea to expunge these folks of ill will because they can be stopped before they break all the china.

Before pressing the button ask yourself if you came into forum expecting to be insulted. If you did then you can read an insult in most line. Also, the tactic of ignoring a rude posting, unless you are prepared to change and compromise your composure. I have never had a problem and responded to my attackers in a civilized manner and have been able to defuse most. Do not be affraid of crossing swords in the world of ideas and taking a minor scratch, it is part of the game.

Enter and have a good time and ignore the crude, they will not be convinced otherwise for they simply goad in order to get their rocks off at your expense.

Dude has made zero enties, has never voted....and he cries about how forums have gone to hell. Gimme a break, he is just here to stir up crap, plain and simple.

**I will edit that to say he has submitted some to the forums, but I still think makeing such a ruckus about someone who never participated in the site is silly.

In response to the "educated individual" with "two masters" and "work in photojournalism" -- the beauty of this site is its democracy. You don't need an advanced degree or years of professional experience to participate and, yes, critique.

As for your view that "most people here like to hear themselves speak utter rejection for any idea that is not there (sic) own. I give long and detailed educated advice, and people feel the need to post that I write to (sic) much" -- every group of human beings, particularly creative ones, is going to have its negative dynamics, whether it's DPC, a college faculty or professional association. But I have found most of the comments on this site constructive, even when they are critical, and I believe most of the members of DPC are supportive of other members. So, you shouldn't allow a few bad apples to ruin your entire experience.

As for your lament about DPC going the way of television and appealing to the lowest common denominator -- this displays the same type of elitism and intellectual snobbery you are ranting against! Have you even watched anything on prime time lately? I'd have to say it's much improved over what people used to watch in the 60s and 70s (apologies to any Gilligan's Island fans out there).

Even the most cosmopolitan cities have their crime, but that doesn\'t mean you should flee to the countryside the moment your car is vandalized.

If you feel DPC could use some improvement -- STAY. Offer the constructive advice you wish others would offer you. Vote for the photos you believe deserve recognition, and continue to vent your concerns in the forums. You can make a difference. After all, DPC is a democracy.
