I apologize if I beat a dead horse here. For black and white II there are 643 entries, that has sort of a Walmart feel to it. Obviously it's mushroomed from the time I spent a year here in 2002/2003 where we'd usually judge less than 400. Over the course of 7 days voting that's about 91 per day I have to vote on. Now I know I only have to vote on 20%, but that's 80% (514) I probably will never see. I majored in art (for a while) and we would take 2-3 hours just critiquing 20 projects. How do we escape this problem. Is it a problem? What about creating 4, 5, or even 6 OPEN challenges to "spread the love" and the individuals involved would only have to vote on their own particular challenges. I think it's great that there are so many enthusiastic people that want to participate, but I also think it's almost a disservice to them if 1) We expect them to critique or at least evaluate almost 650 pictures. 2) Their own photo may only get thumbs point of view assesment. I see folks on the forums complaining their shots are getting hammered but no one is leaving comments. There just isn't any way to (IMHO) to evaluate a picture in 5 seconds.

Thanks, Subhuti

P.S. - I do suppose it's an excellent incentive for people to pay up.

Pretend the challenge has the number of submissions that you prefer and vote/comment on that many. After the first 100 votes nobody's score changes all that much and i think most people would like 20 comments over 650 votes. Pretend it was just like the old days and all those extra pictures arent in the challenge. Sure you'll miss some but you'll appreciate the ones you see more.

600+ pictures in one challenge *or* 600+ pictures spread across four challaenges?

Six of one or half dozen of another if ask me. :)

Until Macro II, i would have agreed with this statement, however my score was at4.95 after 100 votes and then increased by 0.5 over the balance of the voting.

That is an improvement of just over 10 percent. which is quite a material difference.

I would however, agree with others, that it is a big ask to vote on all the images in this and other challanges.

The question is do we go for everything, or reign in on the volume and spend more time on constructive feedback. As for me the feedback is one of the reasons I take part in the copmetitions.

There are many challenges running at the same time, so 4 open ones to spread the love as it were would probably not work. Depends on the subject matter - in July if the challenge is Snow you'll have very few entries. If in december it is Christmas or Holiday you'll get 1,000, especially if it is 'A holiday for Pets or Children holding Flowers, in macro b&w"

I did not enter, so I am not #645! The ribbon winners can brag that they are the best of 600+ entries!
