So, given on the day I'll be arriving in NYC around 9 AM.

The things I plan on photographing/visiting are:

Empire State Building

Radio City Hall

World Trade Center Memorial

Grand Central Station

Central Park

Washington Square Park

Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty

So, where else do you think I should go see? And does anyone know how I can get to Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty?

Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge...work your way to the Brooklyn Heights promenade...beautiful view of Manhattan and the bridges...great restaurants in the area, too!

Oh, Ellis Island/Liberty stuff is at the bottommost tip of the island, in Battery Park...get a subway map...or go here: map

There are some nice street scenes, cafe's and people watching down in Greenwich. One idea is to hook a left on to Bleeker off of 7th and follow that down, then wind your way around that area.

How many days are you there? If it's only one you're going to have to cross some places off your list. If you only have the one day, I'd cross the Liberty / Ellis Island trip off the list. You'll spend too much time on line waiting for the ferry and the photo op is not all that spectacular unless you really like the statue of liberty a lot. More interesting stuff elsewhere.

Times square. The best people watching place in the world. Also, Central park is worth seeing. Go to the Gucci and Prada stores. Go inside and see things you will never be able to afford. New York in beautiful. Don't forget to just sit on a bench and let it in. It is easy to get too busy to just feel the city. have fun, and take lots of pictures. Don't forget B&H. I love that place. It is my favorite memory of NY.

Ground Zero, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Central Park, Aquarium in Bkln, Wall Street, and Rockefeller Center. There's a wonderful boat trip around Manhatten Island called the Circle Line. Grand Central Station, Penn Station, Fraunce's Tavern, Museum of Natural History, which also houses the Planeterium. The Bronx Zoo is among the finest in the world. If I had to choose just one place to visit in NYC it would be the Bronx Zoo, without hesitation. Also very close to the zoo is Botanical Gardens, and City Island.

There is soooo much to see and do in NYC. I'm a native New Yorker, born and raised in the Bronx. Besides the places I've mentioned, there are many fine museums, and the NY Public Library is an amazing place. There are many ethnic areas neighborhoods too. Little Italy, China Town, Harlem, and more. Near the zoo is Arthur Ave, an authentic Italian community with a market, bakeries, and restaurants.

Enjoy your visit!

Might repeat some of what's been said, but...

First, I hope you have more than one day!

I took the Circle Line (3 hour) tour a few weeks ago. Really great trip. It goes from 40th on the west side, down to the Statue of Liberty, up under the bridges (Brooklyn, Manhatten, Williamsburg, etc.), north, through the Bronx River, around and down back to the start. So you get the whole tour around the entire city.

The walk up the Manhatten Bridge is fun and the view is incredible.

China Town is always fun. Especially bartering. :-)

Empire State Building is awesome. Make sure it's a fairly clear day so you can see the view. Get there early and expect a minimum 1 1/2 hour wait. I got there before they opened while the line outside was short. The line moved steadily, but the wait was still 1 1/2 hours long.

Bryant Park is really cute as well.

Bronx Zoo is fun.

Want a night shot of the skyline to die for? Go through the Lincoln Tunnel (Rt. 495 West) and get off at the first exit (Weehawken). You'll need to turn left and find your way (1/2 mile?) to the what's known as the bluffs. There's a little (very little) park there but it's high up and overlooks the city. Most incredible thing I've seen. I have a pic of it on my profile page.

B&H - While a cool store it's insanely busy. It's fun to drop in and say, "Yea, I was there." but otherwise, imho, order online and save yourself from the crowds. It's busy, crowded, hot, and claustrophic. :-)

Southstreet Seaport is cool.

World Trade Center Site. Very sad. Very sobering.

There's a billion more things. You really need dayS to spend there. Lots to do and see. If you plan on using a tripod, you may want to get a permit. Permits are for the city and for each individual park. It's a real PIA.

Have a blast and share your pics!!

Jen

My 2 favorite things to do in NYC ( Exlusive of museums , shows ect.)
1. Rent a horse for an hour at Holland stables and see central park as it was designed to be seen, from horseback. Call ahead to reserve, not cheap but great fun.
2. Take the ferry to Staten Island and back, you don't have to get off to enjoy the waterlinse and port of New York, amazing views and esnse of place. Very cheap and great fun.

For great architecture photography (and fantastic art inside), don't forget the Guggenheim Museum.

Make sure to walk ALL of Central Park. It's absolutely beautiful. Stawberry Fields is inspiring but probably overphotographed. Explore Columbia University also (around the Harlem/Morningside area). Eat at Tom's Restaurant made famous on Seinfeld (112th St.) Washington Square Arch and park - gorgeous. If you're going to be there several days, buy the Metro pass (weekly) for $21. Well worth it. And weather permitting, walk, walk, walk. Manhattan itself is only 14 miles by 2 miles. You can take wonderful photos at night at Times Square! I just got back from there the end of October. Oh yeah, and definitely walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Finally, if you don't want to appear touristy - be sure to fold your New York style pizza lengthwise before biting into it. HAVE FUN, it's the greatest city and the people also are wonderful!!!!

dont think they allow u to walk all the way up the liberty statue anymore. think the farthest u can go is the base now. which sucks. central park is nice, and u can go to the central park zoo while you are there.

The Cloisters. Splendid European medieval structure/museum in the middle of the city (well, it's in northern Manhattan, Fort Tryon Park). Lots of photo ops too - gorgeous view of the Hudson River.
