Any one use this program? Is worth the $64. ACDSee
I have Photoshop, do I need both?
08/11/2002 11:35:58 AM · #2
i have both, but i use them for 2 different things --- ACDSee is a great thumbnail app - after i go out and shoot 40 or 50 shots, i come home and scan through them with ACDSee - then i don't have to open each one in PS - i can find the 4 or 5 that i want to work with, and then open only those in PS to do the final manipulations

I agree with Spiderman... I use it the same way basically... ACDSee is a great browser for simple file viewing. It's also an easy way to pick out the EXIF data from your image.

I also have Windows XP and the Explore on it is great for viewing photos, I guess my question should have been do I need ACDSee and Windows XP Explore?

To answer your question...yes

I love ACDSee
I think it's one of the best things out there. Perhaps only to be superceeded by ThumbsPlus

ACDSee is much faster than Windows built in thumbnail viewer...It also easier to navigate between pictures (just scroll the wheel on the mouse down vs having to click on that little > key in windows)

ThumbsPlus has a nice archiving system where you can assign keywords to photos for easier searching if you have lots and lots of pictures. Aside from that, I love ACDSEe

If you are looking for a nice file broser similar to ACDSee, you should check out ULEAD's Photo Explorer from Download.com. This is a freebie and it works VERY well. It does not show EXIF data, but it's quite impressive for a freebie...

I like ACDSee better too, but the Ulead software is free and performs many of the same functions...

You can download it and use it free for a month - I did, now I can't be without it - so I paid up... I think it's great software...

I downloaded my copy of ACDSEE on Kazaa, I was able to get the whole program for free. I used it for about 1 month and then spent the money for the legal version. It is worth every penny!! If you don't mind having copied software I would recomend getting it with Kazaa. It will save you some money. I have also seen copies of ACDsee 4.0 on ebay.

Just wanted to add my vote for ThumbsPlus. It's not free but it does everything you'll need for this competition. I still use photoshop but then I've got photoshop and I use it for my job - so I would wouldn't I.

Even after playing with Thumbsplus I still think ACDSee 4 is the best for speed...

I got my copy off a disk for an HP scanner... so ask around, someone might just have an unused copy sitting on there desk!

I love ACDSee. Two reasons: 1)It is very quick and 2) It allows me to view my images full screen and with no other text or menus on the screen, like a slide show. I hate having to view small images on other people's browser's where the screen is always cluttered with other information. I can also marquee select an area and quickly zoom in on that spot. Ok, that's three reasons. I find it invaluable.

I use Ofoto's free software for browsing my photos. Nothing fancy here but dependable, and ez.

Another freebie is Irfanview //www.irfanview.com/ Although at this moment I can't access the page...keep trying if your interested.

My Photographs....comments welcome

Thanks everyone for all your comments, I have downloaded ACDSee and Ulead Photo... will experiment and decide whether to buy the ACDSee or not. I can tell that I might be leaning toward buying it..

Also I sure am enjoying this site, and I have learned a lot about my camera and editing my pictures and it looks like it is paying off with better scores this week.

I think its a bit overpriced. IMatch is a similar cost having some viewing capability (admittedly not quite as polished as acdsee) but more importantly wonderful database utilities for organizing and catagorizing your photos.

BTW, what is EXIF data?

AFAIK it tells you what aperture, exposure etc was used for the picture.

ACDSee is excellent. I bought version 3 a couple of years ago, and am still using it in preference to version 4, as it's so much better.

PShop 7 gets used for editing and touching up though :)

I used to use ACDSEE before but now I doawnloaded irfanview.
It is very nice to view the picture (with the default windows viewer you cannot 'pagedown' to the next one). It does resize and can use photoshop *.B8f filters that you can download frm the internet, a lot of them free if you are interested in that.
The only 'slowness' for irfan compare to acdsee it that it takes more time to build the thumbmails and the thumbmails window 'shakes' at that time, but otherwise it's great, it'free
So .. for free .. you CANNOT get better and I find ACDSEE pretty exppensive if just for a viewer.

i also have win xp and just started using their filmstrip view to view my photos. i just have to hover my mouse over the thumnail to view it in the top part of the window, i think it's very cool and i don't think i would pay money for similar software, even if it does have some more features. i guess it depends on what you want out of it.
