It's really pretty simple, Margaret. Previous discussions have shown no significant community support for non-photographic and/or non-original work in DPC. Internal discussion among 3 Admins and the rest of SC has shown very negative feelings about this specific sort of broadening of DPC's focus. We have no intention of pursuing that sort of thing withing the challenge framework, although we have no objection to showcasing work like that in the forums, of course.

I'd suggest that if you feel strongly enough about our decision/process to pursue the subject then take it up with mitalapo, our owner, and suggest that he either overrule us or replace us, because as things stand now it isn't gonna happen.

Is that clear enough?

Yes, I am peeved. You read that correctly. Live with it, OK?

Ok, I got the message, Bear. It is a sad reality. I will try not to make any more suggestions, it was just a spur of the moment.

PS Switzerland is great, no wonder you have a sentiment for it after so many years! And to boast a bit, I passed my French exam for a permanent Swiss visa in flying colors, very happy about that! :)

My approach to this challenge was to give a 5 if the photo "works," if it is "complete." The appeal of this photo is its flashiness. It's bright green, the head and knees are razor sharp while everything else is fuzzy. So a bright, centered subject and .... nothing else. So, 4 for the impressive quality and skill, but if you want a 5 from me the photo has to have an overall reason to exist for its own sake, not just to be impressive in one aspect.

That was not a good idea to ask him for comment, sorry, Roz, his assessment is definitely designed to hurt people, sad times we live in :(

I feel Don was just being honest about his criteria. He is one of the people that is looking for something more than technical competency. He looks for a story or message.

All these wildly differing preferences and opinions is why on a scale of 1 to 10 most entries will fall between 4 and 7. It is very hard to get an image that will appeal to all.

That is an outrageous imputation of motive.

It is not, he confirmed his motives in a PM.

Indeed, I am not anti-bug.

Also, I like Roz, what I know of her. She seems like a really lovely person. I also like a lot of her photographs, and a lot of her bug photographs, and I respect her enough as an emotionally mature artist to comment on why this particular photo is not quite to my liking.

This thread is starting to sound a bit personal. Can we get back on track please ... or has it just run it's course and is ready to be wrapped up?

I'm very happy to hear that, and I'm sure Margaret is as well. I think everything she's saying to me comes from her concern for you.

thanks guys .. it means a lot .. firstly that you were very open about what you like and dont like Don .. and Margaret for your concern for me .. xx

i do have a few things to say .. surprise surprise .. lol ..

i really am in awe of many of the photographers here and regard my own photos as mainly snapshots .. so it is pretty awesome when they are well received in the challenges ..

i would welcome constructive criticism .. or other people’s opinions .. as both are valid .. and would allow me to see my photos with different eyes .. which can be difficult when you are too close ..

anyway .. i was quite surprised that the long legged fly was doing so well in the free study during voting … and of course very pleased .. so that huge drop at the end was a bit hard to take at the time ..

but i tell myself it might feel bad but in a day, a week or whenever it wont have that emotional impact .. being not so attached to the outcome is still a work in progress for me .. i also endeavour to see everything i my life as a learning experience and an opportunity for spiritual growth .. so being in dpc has been great learning curve .. lol ..

but it did feel a bit weird to have such a drop at the end .. so i was interested to hear other ppl’s views on that ..

regarding the insects i shoot .. i try and show the beauty of that macro world .. and the details that are invisible to most people .. i find everything about insects fascinating ..

in fact i found out i have termites in my house and the guy came to get rid of them yesterday .. you wouldn’t believe just how amazing termites are .. but not in your home btw .. !! ..

anyway .. i have some major health issues so i’m limited in what i can enter in challenges .. my lack of imagination doesn’t help either ..

so apologies to anyone who isn’t a fan of ‘flashy’ insect photos .. lol haha .. that’s a joke btw Don .. as i totally understand that we all have a different view and appreciation of the photos ppl put in challenges ..

thanks again everyone .. i really appreciated everything that was said here .. in fact .. i see that huge drop at the end became an opportunity for us to have a discussion that i feel has turned out extremely well .. and given us a greater understanding of where we are coming from in this site ..
and like i said .. its all good .. xx

Brilliant response Roz! Well said and emotionally mature. this is the type of discussion that is beneficial. Seeing things from other people‘s point of view, we all need to respect that, and this is in regards to Don’s perspective also. At least it’s honest and you know he is not lowballing anyone.

Can I point out that if that same "low" vote(s) had been made on the second or third day of voting it probably wouldn't have been noticed ... or if some of the high votes that were given had been made on the last day instead of earlier we might be discussing the strange bump up at the end.

There is absolutely *NO* freakin' way that anyone can predict what resonates with people.

I've really learned that lesson with our gallery.

What I like about DPC is that this place has confirmed that better than anywhere else could have because of the consistent involvement with the process.

The results of the "Late Night Boredom" are a stellar example.

I got 3rd. Seriously???

Go figure.

So Roz, always remember for every person out there who remains completely unmoved by your image, there's someone else for whom it will speak volumes.

BTW, has anyone else noticed a trend at the beginning where the first half dozen or so votes produce a score that will go down about a full point within the next dozen?

That happens to me with regularity. My Male Portrait shot hung over 8.xxxx for almost a full day.

good point Paul .. however when i have a photo in voting that is going really well i note the votes and calculate what vote i received ... there are times where i miss a vote or a few and have to average it out ..
so for the free study .. the 9th and 11th votes averaged 5 .. the rest of the votes were all 6 or over .. until the 33rd and 34th votes which averaged 5.5 .. and then the 36th vote which was a 4 ..

many congratulations on your male portrait .. it had a power to it that is missing in lots of portraits .. you could read many things into that man's expression .. :)

and yes i have experienced the happiness of doing really well with the first few votes .. only to be shot down afterwards ..
on the flip side i have experienced the dejection of getting a couple of very low first votes and then be pleasantly surprised when my score goes up .. thats the roller-coaster of dpc .. lol .. ;)

thanks Jeb .. :)
