For me, they both would have scored about the same. The one you entered seems slightly underexposed. I also feel like a 'scape shot should not have a primary subject, or at least not a subject that dominates the description of the image. Overall, your entry probably would have outscored the outtake with the majority of the voters. JMO.

if you were wanting anyone to comment .. here's my two cents worth .. probably only one cent actually ..!!.. ;) ... and do they even have physical cents anymore .. they dont in australia ..
anyway .. hard call ..
they both appeal to me but in different ways ..
your entry has a lovely haziness .. that soft light coming in on the lhs is just perfect .. beautiful the way its shining on the tops of the waves and the spray .. loving the movement of the sea .. the turbulence ..
the bird is the icing on the cake ..

your outtake .. is more dramatic .. the orange glow is very stunning as is the reflection .. i love the solitary bird ..
