An interesting article on PetaPixel about AI photo restoration software with an online option. I tried one of my old (scanned) images. The result looks promising.

Scanned
AI processed

That is a nice result. Don't know why, but when I think of photo "restoration" I think of old photos that are extremely faded or have tears, missing sections, etc.

Not to take anything away from your end result, but I'm fairly confident that you could get the same result from your scanned image using Topaz AI software.

Yeh, really the change is more what I would call enhancement than restoration. I'd be interested to feed it some of the things I've dealt with, like water-spotting and physical damage like tears or missing pieces.

There are a lot of dollars (in my case euros) between this open source version program and Topaz AI :)

Very valid point! Didn't realize the software you mentioned was free open source. :-}

I strongly recommend VanceAI Photo restorer which performs better in face enhancement.

I have been thoroughly satisfied with PS Elements for going on a decade now. Every three years or so, I spend another $49.95 around Christmas when they have specials and get the latest version.

I've been using it since 8.0 and I'm now at 18.0 Elements 2020. I looked at 2022 but they didn't add anything I particularly want so I'll wait a little more.

This is an image of a great uncle of mine that was from 1917. My sister had the old family albums scanned and I've just been cleaning some choice ones up a little.

No downloading and trying to figure out anything new, no paying for something else, just the same old faithful editing program I already had.

I did fix a really crappy one for a friend a couple of years back. These editing programs we use all the time are VERY good and do a spiffy job of fixing old crappy & damaged images.
