...to a little disappointment that my Blood Moon image didn't fare a bit better in the results. I mean, I knew it was doomed, don't get me wrong, but at the same time I knew that there were gonna be a boatload of "perfect moon shots" and I wanted to do something different, something emotive. And so I did :-) It didn't even look like we'd be able to SEE the eclipse, but suddenly there it was, peeking out of the clouds... Hand-held, 22x tele shot, ISO 3200, 1/15 of a second. That Samsung Galaxy Ultra's a heck of a camera phone :-) Many thanks to Wendy and Rich, who got it and said so :-)

Yeah, I know EXACTLY how you feel. Not giving voters EXACTLY what they want doesn't usually end well for us envelop pushers ;)

I even gave everyone +1 for even attempting anything. Speed challenge on something so specific and, for us old farts on the east coast, late at night! I was glad that there were some funky ones. Made the challenge more interesting. And it actually was pretty cool looking. Although I like the one that tied with you better.

I'm sorry, Bear. I gave it a five. I don't think I would have known what it was if it weren't in the challenge topic named "Moon".

But, then again... I didn't enter at all, so you beat me!

sorry but I declined looking through the same shot over and over again to find your shot.

a failure of faith on my part, I confess.

I have to confess to the same thing. :) I thought it would do better, but it was pretty unconventional. I put it on Reddit where it went semi-viral and received lots of funny comments so that made up for the 5.7. Hah!

Mine did better than I expected haha!

Also a Samsung phone handheld.

Edit: these are also with the Samsung, straight from camera

X100 zoom (optical 10 + digital) gimmicky. It can do better though.

X30 zoom (optical 10 + digital) usable.

In apropos of nothing other than the title of the song, "Bad Moon Rising," here's an anecdote.
You know how when you don't quite catch the lyrics of a song you might discern something entirely different? Well, my wife heard the lyrics of a line of this song, "There's a bad moon on the rise", as "There's a bathroom on the right." And thought, "what's that about?"

Our observatory held a public event for the eclipse, and it looked great. I was running the main telescope and wanted to make sure everyone in the crowd got a look at totality before I switched the eyepiece to my camera. In the 45 seconds it took to make that switch, the sky went from clear to completely overcast, and I only caught a brief glimpse of part of the moon through clouds an hour later.

1. The name for a mis-heard lyric like that is "mondegreen" ...

2. She and about a million other folks mis-heard the same thing in that song. :-)

Thanks, Paul, for the appropriate term (mondegreen) and the reference to the very interesting article about it.
My own small contribution to the cohort is that, as a kid, I misheard "When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's amore" as "When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's a moray." Very confusing, but probably thought, "adults are crazy."

so many people misheard "revved up like a deuce/another runner in the night..." that some Southern radio stations wouldn't play the song.

sometimes I sing to myself, "when you search a ship wreck and an eel bites your neck, that's a moray!"

That one goes to a whole new level of insanity when the auto-captioning (for us deaf people) doesn't accurately replicate either the source oR the garbled version they are laughing at :-)

Actually, my whole life is sort of an extended Mondegreen in that I couldn't hear correct pronunciations so came up with some inaccurate ones of my own that people were (apparently) too polite to correct for me. To this day I'll be asking folks, "Oh, is THAT how it's pronounced? How come nobody ever told me?"

My favorite thing about this thread is how it's morphed from photography to Mondegreens.

Someone must have misinterpreted the topic... ;-)

THis thread is. in and of itself, a complex example of a mental Mondegreen. The General is very good at that stuff :-)
