I was working on the photo I took last night, and I rather shoot the moon, so I was struggling a bit to process it. So I wanted to share what I found if anyone is having difficulties:

The luminance range option in photoshop or light room camera RAW is AWESOME for this!! I wanted to bring down my highlights, but just using the highlight slider or the white slider affected too much.

This is where you can find it:

In photoshop

1. Filter - camera RAW
2. Select the masking tool in the upper right hand corner

3. slide the luminance slider and watch what happens. This is selecting only that part of your photo.

Now you can change the exposure, highlights, shadows, etc., of only that selected portion.

Hopefully that makes sense. Let me know if I need to elucidate more.

I won't be entering the lunar eclipse challenge, but this will be useful for other things. Thanks.

Will play around with this some more. It's not intuitively obvious how this works.

It's an amazing tool, and what I love is that it's now possible inside of Lightroom as well. AI will change the way we edit.

One of the recent updates to Lightroom Masking in Develop module finally got this section fixed and dramatically improved. Apart from Luminance Range you can Select Subject (that was available in Photoshop for some time), Select Sky (but not replace it), define Color Range and Depth Range plus the old ones - Brush, Linear and Radial Gradients.
