Planning a solo road trip for September and thinking of doing a loop around lake Michigan. Want to ride my bike some and photograph some of the lighthouses that dot the shores. Also going to make a stop in St. Louis on the way to visit the Arch.(coming from the Dallas-Ft Worth area)

Can anyone suggest some of the must-see lighthouses or other sights around Lake Michigan? Thanks.

St.Joseph and South Haven are nice in Michigan. Those are ones I'm most familiar with (St. Joe especially).

Have a great trip!

Talk to Kirbic. I bet he's done plenty of motorcycle turning around the Great Lakes.

Here is the South Haven lighthouse.

On the WI side, Sheboygan, North Point (Milwaukee area), Port Washington, Grosse Point (IL), some others. Here is a map of lighthouses on the Lake Michigan shore.
Let me know when you'll be near the Milwaukee area, let's see if we can get together. We are tentatively looking at getting asway the first two weeks of September, so our schedules may or may not align.

Thanks. I'll have from Sept 2nd through 14th, though if I decide I need another 2 days for this plus another weekend following that), I'm sure my manager would be ok with it. I'll get with you once I have a better idea of my schedule.

Currently planning out what I want to see and a rough itinerary. Mackinac island looks interesting and has no motor vehicle traffic, but I'd have to reserve a hotel room months in advance and don't know if I want to lock myself in like that. Maybe I can make that a day trip instead.

I think those are already on my short list. Thanks!

Oh, if you're going all the way up you MUST go to Mackinac Island. Did a couple of trips there as a kid (weeklong duty as guides at the fort with our Boy Scout Troop) and took my family there about 15 years ago. I'd like to go back again now that the youngest one has grown up and could appreciate it more.

Sounds like a great trip you're planning! Have fun.

I'm actually looking at information on that as I type this. Looks good, but I may have to make hotel arrangements months in advance if not just doing a day trip, so looking at my options.

Yeah, the family trip was just on the island for a day. There is camping in areas off the island - take a tent? :-)

Looking like the best and most convenient option for Mackninaw Island is to get a hotel room in Mackinaw city (hotel rooms appear to be priced normally on the mainland) and then just take the ferry with my bicycle for the 2 or 3 days I want to explore the island. There's a Best Western just a few blocks from the Ferry, which is the chain I typically stay at.

Hey Spiff -- when in September are you going? Are you going through MN in one direction? The parks on Lake Superior are incredible.

First half of the month. Sept 3-14th, but I may add another 2 days to run me into the next weekend. 4 more days for the price of 2.

Not going through Minnesota from the direction I'm coming from. Will likely stop in St. Louis for a day. Maybe that's a possible future trip. Could drive into Canada and see some stuff, but this loop around Lake Michigan is plenty for this trip.

Well, that turned out to be incorrect. The price is normal NOW, but when I logged into Best Western and searched for the dates I wanted, the best price was still over $200 a night. For that price I may as well pay a little more and stay on the island a couple of nights.
