So the kid has a canon 6D, now. (golfer DDS’s old one) and spiff was incredibly nice and gave us a sigma 70-300 lens that had some issues, but still functions. The issue was the motor makes an awful noise. But still works! But now that Jesse’s back in town for a short bit, I’ve been looking things over. The camera’s rapid fire is very inconsistent. Sometimes it takes just one shot and stops. Sometimes it will take 3-5 and stop (even though it’s not buffering), etc. I started wondering if it was actually a communication issue between the lens and camera. The only other lens he as is one of my leftover canon lenses (50mm fixed) that also had problems. I dropped it at some point, so it’s a little bit sketchy. Anyway, the rapid shooting seems to work better with that.

Anyway, this is all leading up to lens questions. He’s working out at Zion National Park this summer. He can get a used Canon 70-300 (i think the first series ) for $214. He can get a new sigma 150-600 for $899 (new, on sale). That’s a stretch, but almost doable. But the thing is he wants a wide angle to do astrophotography. If he spends all his money on the sigma lens, is there a cheap option for wide angle? I only knew about the 10-22, which was cheap and great, but it’s aps-c only, so it wouldn’t work.

Or does anyone have any inexpensive but great lenses they want to sell?

Astrophotography can be done easily with a manual focus lens. The Rokinon 24mm / 1.4 has been mentioned as a good candidate. Need something fast for light gathering ...

Keh.com ... used, good price.

Have you used keh before? I don’t know what places you can trust with used. Adorama makes me very nervous when they have lenses marked fair quality and the go on to stay massive fungal growth inside that make affect image quality. So I get even more nervous about places of which I know absolutely nothing,

Rokinon 24mm F/1.4 Aspherical Wide Angle Lens for Canon RK24M-C

Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Art DC HSM Lens for Canon, Black (210101)

Rokinon AE14M-C 14mm f/2.8-22 Ultra Wide Angle Lens with Built-In AE Chip for Canon EF Digital SLR,Black

And Samyang and Bower are just rebrands of Rokinon. If either are cheaper than Rokinon they are the same exact thing

Hi. Yes. Numerous purchases from keh.com, and B&H (used). Have returned a few items without any hassle. 30 day warranty I think. Would recommend either without hesitation.

Another big thumbs-up for KEH. They are very reputable. Any lens condition they list is likely to be conservative. I can't comment on the Rokinon 24/1.4, but I have been incredibly impressed with the Rokinon 14/2.4. That one is out of bounds price-wise new, and hard to find used. I think the 24/1.4 would be a good bet.

I didn't know about them either, until someone recommended them that does nothing but Milky Ways. The Samyang and Bower are fantastic starter len's if you don't want to go into the rabbit hole. Trust me it is a long dark rabbit hole, I do not understand half of what come out of their mouths, but I am learning!
