I didn't even think when I uploaded, but out of the corner of my eye, it loaded up as 2.8MB. Did it change?, I could swear the last time I did it, it said you cant it is too big?

Did you upload as an entry directly or to your Portfolio first?

Straight from computer to Challenge

I just did another one and it was large, 2.13 MB BUT also the dimensions where 2000x3000

You can see it in the sunny spot challenge if that helps to see the EX (remind me to take it out lol)

Not sure what's going on ... it'll take someone with better equipment and maybe more access to the site guts to figure it out ...

The site automatically reduces overweight/oversized images in challenges now. Has for some time. I think... It's not a good thing to have happen to your work, but it at least gets you in the door.

Interesting. I've always had my uploads rejected if they exceed the size limit by even a few Kilobytes. Happened fairly recently. Maybe the downscaling is based on pixel dimensions, not file size.

I wonder if it varies according to whether you drag-and-drop or use the "classic uploader" link (as I do) -- I think I've had rejections not that long ago as well, though I try to make sure to save them under the limit but push it sometimes ...

If I resize my entry to just below 700, say 698 0r so, when I upload it, it goes to over the 700 and rejects it. I have to resize a bit lower and that is often quite a bit lower.

With the low cost of storage these days why do we still have such low limit?? The quality of images suffers at 700kB. Why not go up to 2 MB?

Somebody mentioned in one of the earlier threads that if the file is bigger than 1200px on the longest size, the site automatically resizes it down to 1200px and also reduces its size to less than 700KB, however if the file is 1200px or less but more than 700KB, it gets rejected. I just double-checked this, and it seems to be correct. But keep in mind that the file size reduction the site performs in the former case is drastic, in my test it went from 4MB original down to 193KB ...So I would not rely on the site to do the rescaling for you.

I was the one who mentioned that. Since I made that discovery I've been resizing all my landscape shape images to 1300px across so that I don't have to worry about the 700KB limit, but based on what you say, perhaps that's not a good idea. I make my portrait and square images somewhat smaller so that they fit on my monitor.
