I am having problems with this statement in a recent thread:
" I've seen some of your before / after results <wink> and you definitely have a way of tweaking things (in a good way obviously)."

I have just received comment on this image:
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/3000-3999/3303/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1265268.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/3000-3999/3303/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1265268.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

I have never had before a member of SC overusing their privilege of seeing originals of top 5 entries. I do not wish to receive public comments that indicate the knowledge of the original unless I have explicitly agreed to it.

Does anyone else feel strongly about this?

Hmmm. That was my comment.

I like to check out similar work in a photographers public portfolio mostly on the Archival challenges. I find it interesting.

Not sure what you're talking about on the posted image (it's not a Top 5 and I have no idea what your original looks like).
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/3000-3999/3303/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1265268.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/3000-3999/3303/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1265268.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

You DO have a way of "capturing" the light. It's a compliment. ???

You have the original for this image:
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/2000-2999/2729/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1226586.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/2000-2999/2729/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1226586.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

The other comment you mention (made in a recent thread) was to Mary Ann (' . substr('https://www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('https://www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' grahamgator), and it too was a compliment - she has serious skills in putting together wonderful final artwork, as do many of our top ribbon winners.

I'm kind of glad you brought this up Margaret. I'd love to see us make it mandatory to post the original image to Top 5 finishers. As a "teaching" site that many want DPChallenge to be, the knowledge gained by the community would be AWESOME! I not sure at this point that it's something we could do, but "change" is a possibility, yes? Probably would need a side storage space to hold the originals as it wouldn't be fair to take portfolio space from the top finishers in order to post originals. Could be interesting. Might have to float this in a separate thread.

That's from 3 years ago. Not sure that I can see that (I know the 3 Admins can). I'll have to check.

Oiii. Yes, the older ones are obtainable I see. Well, FWIW, I think both the original and post presented product are fine images Margaret.

I am firmly against this idea. The purpose of the original is to validate the date of the image and meeting the respective rules, nothing to do with learning. If you would like to learn from the authors of the winning images it would be better to invite them to share their creative choices while working on the final entry. And that only if they want to.

There are obviously many other issues with posting originals on the public Internet site, like copyright etc etc

Does DPC SC have a privacy policy? If not, maybe there should be one in place.

(corrected to add the ruleset for validation)

I'll bring it up in SC forum, Margaret. I don't think it's *bad* what Barry did, exactly, but I can understand how it shouldn't be happening nevertheless. It's not good policy.

As for automatically linking the originals in the guise of "learning", we'll never do that. There are a bunch of reasons not to do it, not least of all that some originals have been cropped to make them comply with our nudity policy, and others have recognizable individuals cropped out of them who have not agreed to be exposed on the internet.

Plus, as you point out, what you "started with" is nobody's business but your own unless you choose to share it.

Thank you, Bear.

Well, I STILL think it would be a good learning tool, when applicable. Our member community would be totally blown away by the photoshop skills of some of our top placing photographers, and the degree to which everyone could advance would be crazy to watch.

However, I do understand the restrictions on some of the originals (more so now in regards to nudity policy and / or personal visibility).

Good chat! :-)

having read most of this thread I can understand everyone's point of view ..
I sometimes share my originals if asked and often if not asked ..

it's a wonderful way of showing how a photograph which has almost nothing going for it .. which mine mostly are .. can become something much more appealing ..

I think sharing originals and providing editing steps is a great thing for all of us who want to learn different techniques etc ... :)

editing to say .. sharing originals and providing editing steps would be only if the photographer wanted to do that .. probably understood .. but thought i'd point that out anyway ..

Hi roz. You do a nice job of sharing with your time, comments, and photography. You are most certainly one of the ones I alluded to with crazy skills (which is known to most everyone here). :-)

Willem (' . substr('https://www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('https://www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' willem) started a nice thread that fits the sharing of post-processing before/after scenario. I plan on taking a look to see if I have anything worthy of posting there, but if you wanted to throw something in to jump-start it again ??? That would be cool. :-)

Well, I would love to get a nice compliment on my photo like Barry gave. It reads like a compliment, written like a compliment and looks like a duck. I think way too much was read into it.

If there was any thing nefarious going on, I can guarantee they would not be council members, they would be millionaire photographers, as they see the original then the edited version. They would have run for the hills with all the knowledge they got from seeing how it went from 1 thing to a ribbon winning photo. They would have mad skillz!

I once posted the original of a very high scoring shot. SC had already validated it, but by posting the original, it started an argument in the forums from some who felt I had illegally changed the content of the photo (All I had done was change the colors, but that affected the viewers perception of some elements in the photo). I regretting sharing that original in the spirit of learning.

Steve - I'm so sorry that you regret sharing the original you mention. However, I'd like to say that this is exactly (IMO) one of the reasons to share more of the before / after successful (well, in terms of scoring high here) images. You were validated and did nothing wrong. It sounds like some that viewed it were shocked (hence the strong opinions). But, again, you were validated. Sounds like a lesson there for the participating community here to get a better feel of what CAN be done in post to achieve their vision.

I hope you'd reconsider sharing again in the near future. Thanks!

I would be happy to share my pre edited photos. I honestly sometimes donít remember what I have done in editing, all within the rules of course. Iím sort of a touchy-feely editor. Iíll make an adjustment and see if it looks good and then go onto the next idea. This would force me to keep track of what I had done more precisely.

I don't keep exact track of every step, and do the same. But I have a general workflow and usually recall closely enough what I did to satisfy the SC when they review. Mostly they want to make sure the image is taken within challenge dates and you didn't do any totally illegal editing to it, though those rules have relaxed a bit in recent years.

Much ado here.
All artists, even amateurs, have to take comments in stride.
