I really tried hard to get the Brown (last place) in this challenge but couldn't. It ended on 4.7 while I thought it wouldn't score more then 2. It is quite ridiculous that my image still scored so high...it's a terrible snapshot taken to be terrible on purpose. It's out of focus and it's a boring unattractive image yet it scored almost as well as my "Reflections in Water" challenge entry. In fact there I even received a 2 and in Hole in The Wall I could not even manage to get a 2 at all. Leads me to seriously question how seriously one can take the scores and votes on any of the challenges here. This was taken in my garage where I had just removed a bracket from the wall that left this ugly gaping hole and I just took the shot without checking focus and without any thought for composition or anything at all. In another 2 challenges which are in the voting stages right now I took the snapshots with my cheap budget mobile phone with a 2mp camera and plastic lens and they are terrible and blurry and there's nothing pleasing about the images at all yet they too are doing remarkably well for what they are...unbelievable really. It spurs one on to try and take the worst possible photo's one can just to see how badly one can get them to score. A whole new ball game of fun and intrique. Maybe my talent lies with purposefully taking the worst snapshots I possibly can with no regard to good photographic techniques at all ;)

hahahaha Fred .. you made me laugh ...
i have felt for a long time that to get the brown would be as difficult as getting the blue ..
i'm not going to try for it .. i'll leave that up to you as you seem quite keen .. lol ..
but really .. you almost made it .. 21st out of 22nd for the hole in the wall .. should i congratulate you .. that would be akin to getting the red if the 'tables' were reversed ..
anyway .. your reflections in water was a gorgeous image .. and could never compete with your hole in the wall in this alternate universe where one tries to do badly in a challenge ..

if you play 500 .. the card game .. your quest reminds me of calling misère .. which is my favourite call in the game of 500 btw ..
"a misère bid means the bidding player is trying to not win any tricks.
An open or lay down misère, or misère ouvert is a bid where the player is so sure of losing every trick that they undertake to do so with their cards placed face-up on the table."

Thanks for your feedback Roz ...you made me smile and I'm going to be looking into that game you mention misère...sounds like it could be fun....I have also never played Solitere yet and have been meaning to give that a try too sometime.

The trouble is, aside from focus issues, it's not a bad image. Certainly not worthy of a 2.

(I forgot to vote on this challenge.)

Fighting JMRitz for the Brown is like trying to fish a bit of eggshell out of a cracked egg; incredibly elusive target. Besides which, your entry actually fit the challenge perfectly. So you did amazingly poorly IMO (or well, from your perspective) :-)

I actually really really liked it -- but the focus issues ruined it for me. I gave it a 5 for a great find for the challenge, but I would have given it a 9 if the focus was on. I found it quite appealing in it's shapes and lines, but it made my eyes freak out a bit.

Quite ironic Wendy that you liked this image that I specially tried to make as bad as possible...this is the very first time since I have been a member here (and that is since 2008) that I have received a comment from you on a challenge entry of mine. So I had to really go all out to ensure I entered the worst possible entry I have ever entered and that turns out to be the one that you really liked. Heck, I think it's really time I give up my photographic hobby now ;)

I've intentionally tried to get a brown once and was beaten out by a black square. I've nailed a couple of browns when I wasn't trying though. One was an OK image in a high scoring challenge.

Naw -- what it shows is that this place has opened my mind quite a bit, and I can appreciate the more abstract, artistic shots. Look again at what you photographed. Imagine it focused, and now look at the lines, shapes, and structures of your find. It has more personality and story than many of the true "hole" photos.

Hmmmmm.....looks like unintentionally I almost created a masterpiece..... I must try this approach more often in the future and refine and perfect it. Tomorrow I'll start by knocking more holes in my walls and photographing them ;)

You should have patched the hole, then you would've gotten a DNMC citation and a low score from me.

You've gotta suck better than that for the Brown, Fred.

Talk to me for tips.

I do it naturally.

Thanks very much...I appreciate that a lot...nice to belong at last :) and also at last I have found my niche. One thing that still bothers me is that even though I won the Brown I still feel the image scored way too high...
I mean look: one 7, five 6's, nine 5's and 14 fours...That's way crazy and makes me think that most voters have no idea on how to properly judge a photo on it's merits. This entry of mine was total junk with absolutely no merits at all yet most
voters still gave it good scores...doesn't make sense. By the same token on most of the top 5 entries there are always 1's and 2's and 3's which do not make sense either. Oh well...shrug...so be it

Yep :) I'm getting better and better at it now that I've gotten the taste for it.
