All in all I am very disappointed that this image did so badly as I had high hopes for it and thought that most voters would be astute enough to see that the image contains more then just a physical reflection in water and in fact has two separate elements of reflection ... a spiritual reflection as in "reflecting upon" which is what is suggested by the lone figure strolling along the shore and then of course the physical reflection being the bright setting sun reflected in the water. Maybe my title "A Moment To Reflect" has made voters focus only on the man strolling at the waters edge reflecting upon life and has made them fail to see that there is also a large burning ball of a sun in the sky and that that burning ball of a sun is being reflected in the water quite dramatically. Unfortunate that most voters look only for colorful eye-candy type images and totally miss looking for mood and emotion in photographs. And if I have been down voted because there is technically something wrong with this photo then I would like that to be pointed out by the voters who voted 2's 3's and 4's because I cannot see why anyone would vote a 2 or a 3 or a 4 for this image unless they feel that there is technically something amiss with it. It is this that gave rise to my IDCAFA post the other day and makes me think I might as well also just leave DPC as so many others have been doing in the past 2 years.

Fred, we are all disappointed when our entry doesn't fulfil our expectations. I gave your photo 6. I think it is a nice photo - better than nice - but the challenge was Reflections in Water, so the added element of reflective thought is not an extra bonus. The physical reflection is only a small part of the composition, maybe overwhelmed a little by the expanse of foreground. There were some stunning shots in this challenge.

Thanks for the 6 Jomari..it's the voters that gave me 2's, 3's and 4's that I have an issue with.

C'mon, Fred....

You've been here a day or two.

If you want people to gush over your images, go to FaceBook.

If you want to be slapped upside the head with brutal truth, enter challenges here.

You just got a Blue with your kitchen shot 'cause it was f*ckin' righteous!

This one not so much.

That's why I keep coming back.

I never want to think I'm too good at this stuff no matter how much I sell in our gallery.

DPC keeps me grounded.

I gave you a 3. For me, the sun is so bright that it is all I can focus on. And while the sun is reflecting on the water, that is a very small part of the image.

We have all had entries that we thought were great only to be voted low. If this is your first, then you have been lucky.

It's a beautiful image, but you have a lot of literal minded folks at DPC. When the topic says "Reflection" they want to see detailed reflections, not vague shapes. I would have given you at least a 6.

No Jeb I don't expect people to gush and you know that. Did I say or imply that? I don't think so. All I said is that I was very disappointed and had high hopes for this photo which means that I had hoped it would do better then the 5.3 it ended with.. If the image had scored around 5.7 or so I would have felt it was justified. But I do not feel 2's, 3's and 4's are justified sorry.
Besides that I am grounded and do not suffer from delusions of grandeur. I think my images are pretty below par on average and I do not consider myself a very good photographer at all ok but that doesn't mean I have to keep my trap shut when I disagree with something

Not my first and I did not think it was great at all. Did I say that anywhere? I don't think so. I just thought it was worth more then the 5.3 it ended with that's all.
1 tells me it is utter rubbish, 2 tells me it is very poor, 3 tells me it is bad
4 tells me it's ok'ish but not all that good, 5 tells me it is average
6 tells me it is good, 7 very good, 8 extremely good, 9 absolutely wonderful, 10 Amazing, Stunning, Brilliant

Anyway that is how I interpret it and also how I vote

So personally I feel it's in between a 5.7 and a 5.9 somewhere and it would have ended there abouts if it wasn't for the two's and the three's and the fours that it got..
But hey! I am already sorry I dared to make my feelings known and it doesn't really matter anymore now anyway.

This is a reasonable voting algorithm, similar to what I use, but you do realize that others use different criteria, and some use more "extreme" patterns. However, as long as they vote consistently and fairly (applying the same criteria equally to all images) it's within DPC guidelines.

That someone gives your image a vote of 3 is probably meaningless as long as they also gave images of "similar quality" a 3.

That indeed makes sense thanks :) Yes maybe the quality is terrible too although I would like someone to point out what's wrong with the quality so that I can try and improve that in the future.

You cursed the image, and yourself right here by your own admission...."I had high hopes."

It fell below your expectations and you're unhappy.

I've found that if you release the image to its fate with no set score in mind, you have an easier time dealing with getting slapped about.

There are as many ideas on voting style as there are members. That convo runs a bunch during the normal course of the year, usually because someone decides that 2s, 3s, & 4s aren't really justified unless the image is totaslly crappy.

Nobody ever gripes when an image gets above what you thought it should.

I've gotten two Blue ribbons that to this day I don't understand.

But I'm okay with that! LOL!

I forgot to vote this challenge, but I am a fan of your take on the challenge. I would have guessed/given higher than 5.3

I'm with Don (posthumous) on this.

"It's a beautiful image, but you have a lot of literal minded folks at DPC. When the topic says "Reflection" they want to see detailed reflections, not vague shapes. I would have given you at least a 6."

I was one of your 7's. At first I focused on what was reflected and considered the sun, apart from the entire image, to be a common, well-worn reflection. Many voters went this far and halted. But I really did like and appreciate it, so upon reflection (uh, sorry) the sun loomed larger and more significantly in its entirety. As a matter of fact, in a free study I would probably have given it an 8 or 9. But the reflection itself, the crux of the challenge, just didn't hold it's own against many of the other entries. I think of this type of image, like yours, as glancing and, as Don notes, are given short shrift by literal voters as well as those who look for pretty and colorful. Understated, thoughtful, demanding an effort and glancing photos are often doomed from the start, and the entrant needs to acknowledge this and sigh. In any case, I believe it's more rewarding to follow your own star than strive for the kudos of others.
Many people look forward to more images from you, and the quality of this photo speaks for itself.

Thanks for your feedback...I can now see it all in a better perspective...what you say makes total sense...thank you :)

That makes me feel a lot better...it shows me that I am on the right track as that is what I wanted to achieve...not a ribbon at all but just some acknowledgement that the image has merit and knowing that I have reached some voters with the message and emotion behind the photo....so now I feel it was not all in vain....that makes me happy...not ribbons but knowing that I have been able to connect with other people here on DPC through my image

I was one of your 7s. I liked the mood of the image but I did not think it was quite meeting the challenge. Like most voters I expected some clearly visible reflections in water, even so I voted quite high.
10/28/2021 07:00:47 AM · #20
I also gave you a 7. I too felt I would have scored it higher in a different challenge.
