Recently, I cleaned out a ton of old RAWS, about a 1 Tb. Did deep defrag and cache clean out.

I seem more laggy and slow than before. Or it could be the same as before I took all the photos out, and I am just noticing it more as I thought it would be better.

Am I missing something on PS or Bridge CS5, that I could be doing but not know about?

Thanks

Cleaning of disk space will only affect performance in case the program that you are using is disk intensive (frequent read/write between RAM and disk) or if a program needs to write a swap file (because of RAM shortage and a need to switch content/context) and available space for that is limited or fragmented.

I am not an expert on PS or bridge memory use, but from my own experience I think PS and Bridge do most of the processing in RAM and only write to disk is you specifically tell it to do so.

Therefore, unless your disk before the clean was very full, I would not expect an effect on performance, positive or negative.

For hardware factors: add RAM, upgrade GPU, use SSD drives, upgrade to computer with faster CPU. Defragmenting a spinning hard drive sometimes helps a little. Freeing up disk space helps in more limited circumstances such as when writing to scratch disk is being limited by space.

Fortunately, there are many preference settings that can improve performance without extra hardware costs (see this article) for multiple examples (other resources pop up via search engine with most of the same suggestions).

I also find that closing almost all other programs (browsers, email, ...) can help at times.
