Our terrific blue ribbon winner in the Starburst challenge was basically accused of cheating in the Comments Made During The Challenge (perhaps this person simply missed the obvious long exposure). But why such petty attacks? What happened to the spirit of fun here? If a member thinks there was cheating isnít there a formal process in place for a proper investigation rather than an ad hominem public attack? So I guess it is really all about the ribbons eh?

People are working hard right now to improve all aspects of DPC and perhaps even grow this admirable venture back to the glory days of hundreds of entries - letís not make their job even more difficult.

I honestly do not feel there was any disrespect in The comment made. Some of the pictures entered were so good that I wondered if a filter was used as well, but I voted based on the quality of the picture regardless. Rules are sometimes left so subjective that there are many ways to interpret them. I myself recently withdrew an entry because the rules suggested a certain technique. I did not use that technique but my entry mimicked it. I agreed that it wasnít in the ďspiritĒ of the challenge. Only to find out that other entries used the same processing as I.

I wouldn't worry about it. Yes, a ticket could have been submitted to SC, but it would have been ignored. Reason being, the only "rules" for any challenge is what's written in the challenge rules section of this site. That holds true with one exception, and that is if there are SPECIFIC rules written into the description, which will be highly visible and flagged as such.

The photographer of the Blue Ribbon got the last laugh here. :-)

Had I been the photographer in this entry and received the comment, I think I would have been pleasantly surprised that someone thought I had used a supplementary filter, and taken it as a compliment. I did not take the comment as negative, and it seems the voters loved it, as did I.

' oldbimmercoupe, If you are dedicated to preserving "the spirit of fun" at DPC and growing "this admirable venture back to the glory days of hundreds of entries", why did you start a negative thread? Do you think this is encouraging either of those things?

The proper way to handle a situation where you perceive an atrocity has been committed is to send a ticket to Site Council and let them handle it.

I did not think Girish cheated. I did not send a ticket to SC about Girish's image because there was no wrong committed. I love getting comments, so I give them.

I am not at all ashamed about my comment on Girish's image. Girish is my friend and he made a fabulous image. I congratulated him after his win.

You said, "People are working hard right now to improve all aspects of DPC... letís not make their job even more difficult."

I totally agree, Jim. This thread is totally against every thing you said you wanted.

This is not the first time you've attacked me. I don't think you'd be pleased if I shared what you wrote in your private message to me the last time... with the public. I have been nothing but civil to you.

This has to stop, Jim.

I would much rather get a comment that someone is not sure about how I did something, even if they did vote me low for it, than no comment at all. This at least gives me an idea of what the voter was thinking. I did not see them as accusatory statements, just statements.

:)

I am not worrying with the comments, in fact every comments on my entty challenges me to see how each of think on a given situation :D

if I look back my-self specially one challenge "color on color" and this was my entry that was when? 15 years back LOL.

I learned from the comments and feedback and seeing how others have done it. Comment from Lydia also helped me to see things in different way and yes there was a photography i took with the star filter in my backyard but then I didn't submit because the problem statement was same, did I create stars or stars were created by the filter. I wanted to create something from the lens, other day one of the comment for my "Old Movie Stills" challenge, there were stars and that was because of narrow aperture the only thing different in this case long exposure 2.5 minutes that in the night, I have never done it. so to me what new I did, I did that long exposure in the night :)

now have some laugh on this entry :D I still laugh when I look at this submission.

Maybe we should have a variation on a Free Study where you re-create your first DPC submission (or maybe one of your first five to allow for some impossibilities) ... titles should be the same to facilitate humorous comparisons ... :-)

I love the idea, but... I JUST did that for "Absurd"...

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/3000-3999/3207/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1260633.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/3000-3999/3207/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1260633.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

So... could we have more than just our first, please?

Maybe first ten... in case whatever we shot before we no longer have?

Also, does it need to be Extended to allow for people who only enter Extended to be able to play?

I didn't read that the first time. I'm not a fan of that, but...

If we don't do that, people can just enter whatever they want, letting people assume they're playing fairly. No one will know they were "lying" until after it ends.

Ok then. Let's add a twist. Re-create the first, or one of the first five entries, of ANY user of DPChallenge. You must use the same title as the original. This way peeps won't know whose entry it is until rollover.

BRILLIANT!!

I love it!

Well, the "point" (if any) of this suggestion was for people to display their own "progress" as a photographer since joining DPC. People can be honor-bound to not look up the originals, or perhaps titles could be hidden during voting ... though we have self-portrait challenges and those aren't anonymous either ...

Using someone else's original seems to me to present an opportunity for one-upsmanship or embarrassing others rather than oneself ...

I agree!

I don't agree... I think that everyone has progressed in their photographic journey here that they would agree that their first entries could use some help.

At least... unless they're really new.

But, if we set a limit... making sure the copied photo's photographer had "X" amount of entries, or "X" amount of time here... enough that they've been here a while, then I think it would be fine to re-do their image.

I would be honored if someone thought I had a great idea for a photo... but just didn't "pull it off back then"... before I learned more.

What do you think? Would you be offended if someone re-created one of your first five entries here and did it better than you did?

I would be shocked if they didn't do "better" ... and I think that's part of the point --it's easy to look for someone else's crappy first entry and make it "better" but harder if your choice is limited to your own pictures.

They are just two different challenges; they can both be run as long as they aren't too close together ...
