People seem to wonder what it was in my recent "Abstract BW" entry

I explained it briefly in my photographer's notes now, but I thought it would be also interesting to see the original

Nothing tricky in processing, just BW conversion and inversion.

Abstract B&W - not a high performer score-wise but thought the before / after was interesting. :-) Thought there might be something in the scene to use. Wasn't really sure until I started playing with it.

Just a rotate, crop, and Topaz B&W effects filter.

This was my entry in "Extended Free Study 2021-10:

Actually, this composite of four shots did not look that much different from the originals. We spent two days and three nights in Siena, and every night I went wandering and taking photos of its nearly empty (thanks, COVID) narrow medieval streets. Could not get enough of them :). This is only a small portion of those night-time shots

Lev - what a unique vision to see that and bring it all together. Thanks for sharing the before / after of your front page entry!

Taken at late-dusk with flash, but thought it would do better if it looked more like daytime.

I’ve been wondering about the willingness of several to post their original JPEGs myself included. Are we putting ourselves at risk of having our originals stolen? There have been reports, again myself included, of individuals stealing our images and using them as their own. If we offer our originals what proof do we have that they are ours?

I post a JPEG sized as for a DPC entry and with no processing other than rotation for portrait images -- I think "unprocessed" is what's meant by "original" in this context. You can't post a RAW image anyway if that's how you shoot. If you're extra-paranoid watermark the images you post -- I don't think that would interfere with people evaluating your processing.

As to proof ... my Canon came with software which allowed me to customize the EXIF so that my name and address are included. Yours probably did too ...

The ultimate answer is to register your images with the US Copyright Office -- you can register an entire collection at once which should protect the underlying images while saving on registration fees, though you should check out their instructions/FAQs for the particulars. Registration allows you to sue for statutory damages for infringement, not just provable damages.

Tiberius - Awesome transformation! That's very cool. What did you have to do to achieve that end result?

Thanks! I like how you really pushed the limits on the Blacks, Whites, Shadows, and Highlights to get your result. Takes an artist to see the final image you produced from that original.

Here's the jpeg of where TORN started, straightforward processing, crop, bumped exposure, desaturate layer mask eye, brightness layer mask face, levels, cleaned up tear in the paper near mouth and stray hairs with spot healing

I love seeing images before and after processing. I like when the photographer takes things in a completely different direction than I would have thought to go or when they recognize something in the original that I might have missed. So, my contribution to this thread is an example that fascinated me over ten years ago that Robert posted.
