If you'd started this a couple of days later I'd submit a "Shallow DOF" outtake ... but there's a 100%% chance I'll take some blurry photos in the next two weeks. :-)

Sounds like participation from you for sure! Added you to the list. :-)

Is this (and any other) side challenge intended for photos taken after the topic announcement?

No hard and fast rule. In general I think we'd want to post up new images. However, resurrecting a previously taken image to use as an example could be appropriate at times I'd think.

Bottom line - it's about learning, experimenting with something that may be outside your area of expertise, or in some cases showing / teaching others if you do happen to excel in the chosen venue. No rights or wrongs here. Total sandbox.

Going to take new photos, but I've always liked this one I took years ago.

Camera on tripod, nine second shutter. Click, wait three, swivel a little, count three, swivel a little more, done.

Going to jump in, something to encourage me to get my camera out this week.
ETA: May have to dust off the lens baby.

I used to like using toy multifaceted "kaleidoscopes" (as found in birthday gift bags--see last picture below) which just about fit the lens opening on my old Olympus camera....

Nice Chris!

I'll join in. I'm always playing with ICM though I only recently learned it's called that. :-)

Great use of a toy lens Paul. That and the Xanthine will give you the jitters.

Here are a few I shot down in Big Sur a few weeks ago. The sunset was a handheld 1.6 sec pan; the other two were shot at 1/25 while rotating the camera (abstract) or shaking it gently back and forth (tree).

I took this at Lake Travis near Point Venture, TX. The wind was blowing at about 20 MPH causing the lake to toss pretty well. I was more interested in the color than the boat, so I focused on the near side of the lake. Shot at f/7.4 and 1/95 sec.

And I was playing with this...

Photo Link

That's an interesting image Ed. It does have some strong color to it. I went ahead and created a link for it. If you have a complete URL you can use the 'link' icon (globe) to post it. Of course, you could go ahead and sign up for a membership, get the blue shirt, and have 100mb of space to saving images here. Also, just in case ... image size limits in a forum post are 500px on the long side. Usually we just post a thumbnail (via our DPC portfolio space).

ETA - the link resolves to a https when it loads in a browser. Not happy. Need to edit it, once in the browser, to a straight http.

Welcome aboard Dennis ( EstimatedEyes) ... left some comments on your fine images!

Figured I better share something too. :-) Got home from work and headed outside to grab a few frames. Ended up using this woodpile as my "subject" matter.

... and from that I have these to share.

, , ,

p.s. - this side challenge really made me notice how dirty my sensor is on this camera!!! Yikes! Time for a cleaning. :-}

Thanks Barry. Nice set of woodpile images. Great way to blow of steam after work!

Images are being posted. Clue me in -- has the challenge started? Do we just post our photos here? More than one?

Yep. This is the posting thread. Toss 'em in. I don't know of any hard & fast rules really. Concept, to me, is just to share and learn something new. Also, if anyone has any questions about how something was done, etc. I think those would be totally appropriate.

Conversation starter ...

My approach to obtaining something interesting is to set my ISO as low as it will go, set the aperture to the smallest setting (basically stopping down the light) and most often move the camera in a circular or figure eight pattern while the shutter is open. Sometimes I'll starting the camera moving first and press the shutter as I'm in motion. That's for one style.

I've seen some in here already that use a panning motion (horizontal so far).
Another popular use of creative blur is vertical panning, used frequently with a grove or forest of trees.

Any ideas / techniques that any of you frequently employ?
Anything you're looking to try?

Dennis - I'd love to know what you had in mind when you took that image of the 'Fire-charred Oak' (beautiful image BTW!). Did you approach that with a specific plan or did it just kind of happen?

I started out looking for some "naturally blurry" subjects ...

Sorry this is not a new image, shot last month for the FS, but ran out of time today. I have shot a lot of ICM images over the years and stopped entering on DPC after a while as it started to be a bit predictable. But after a hiatus of a number of years, I recently started shooting ICM again. I'm glad I did, as it's still quite satisfying. Never really knowing what you are going to get. New images over the weekend if not tomorrow

An older image where blur came in spontaneously

Thanks for all the kind comments. I made that image just shaking the camera back and forth during the exposure. It was at 1/25 so the shaking had to be a little more vigorous, and you can see that in the half moon movements reflected by the streaks in the grass and elsewhere. You can read a little more about this image and the others I made down in Big Sur here.

And yes it was intentional. At least in the technique I was using and the results I hoped to get. But there’s always a bit of serendipity and luck involved in how it comes out. I do a lot of intentional camera movement during the exposure. The more I’ve done this the gentler my camera movements have become. Longer exposures make it easier to move the camera slower, and that gives results that sometimes look like it was a multiple exposure or blended image when it’s not. An ND filter really helps because you can slow down and shoot wider open, avoiding all that sensor dust that shows up when shooting at f/22 or above. You can see more of that work here if you're interested.

Another technique I like is soft focus. I’ve shot with lensbabies and soft focus portrait lenses, but sometimes I will just throw the camera out of focus on purpose. Here’s a soft focus image I made that way a couple days ago.
