The show is the best ever, story, acting, photography, MUSIC... but I'm not sure we all have chess pieces at our disposal.

Every library has chess games to loan. Probably every community center.

It's streaming on Netflix. A limited series. Unreal how good it is. Must-see!

I've not watched the show either (we don't have internet really capable of streaming).

I get using a chess piece as an entry or focal point (could even call this challenge "Chess", or "Chess Piece").

Do NOT see any reason to run this as Extended. ???

Yes, but many of these are closed right now.

It seems to me it should be possible to find an interpretation which doesn't require the use of "actual" chess pieces. Remember they represent other entities, and you can always make your own (Lego, clay, etc.).

I would love to have extended editing to try to recreate the scenes where she is playing shadow chess on the ceiling... :)

That would get a very low score from me personally as I've not seen the show and would expect basically chess pieces only for fitting the challenge. Nothing personal.

The imagery in the Netflix series was excellent. Given the theme of the proposed challenge is "Queen's Gambit" rather than simply "Chess Pieces," I think it is appropriate to be open to images that go beyond basic chess pieces to incorporate something related to the look and feel of the series (even if you may not be a fan of Extended editing).

How would anyone know this when an obscure challenge theme, with a limited audience familiarity, is selected? The only reference I would have as a voter is chess pieces.
12/26/2020 10:27:46 AM · #14
you don't need to be familiar with the show because the cinematography was basically "DPC ribbon winner"

With any other challenge if you're not familiar with the subject definition you can just look it up, via Google, etc. Here, it's being suggested that you need to have watched the show to be familiar with it. That is REALLY limiting the audience of submitters / voters IMO. So ... again, I'll vote chess pieces, anything else, DNMC (IMO).

I'm not local to the place where I am currently so am not a library or community member. We are also living in a bubble here because of the pandemic.
I have no access to things like chess pieces and Legos and am not going to purchase them, but I'm happy to sit on the sidelines and watch you play.

You know, it's just a title ... your photo doesn't need to be about the show or even chess -- there are other queens and other gambits. If I was in the UK I'd try to depict Elizabeth's strategy for denying Charles the throne ... and those who live in certain sections of New York or San Francisco may find other inspiration ... ;-)

True. Maybe archival would give me more options.

Bah, humbug ... :-(

what happened to the idea of not including descriptions?

And if it ends up just in the description and not a "special rule" you are free to not follow it.

Well, if there wasn't a description I would have just followed the first link I posted (as would others that weren't clear what the challenge subject is - I think).

The Queen's Gambit is beautiful. You are giving up a pawn but it has yet to be refuted by man or machine and is still played at the top levels all the time. By all means, let it inspire your photographs!
