I was looking at the images and realize can I use a photoshop brush (any) in extended and is it legit? e.g. a brush that is "heart" shape and I use around the image to create some love, will that be consider for extended?

Should be fine -- in Extended you can do pretty much whatever you want as long as any source images are taken within the submission period (unless the challenge is labeled "archival").

ETA: I think you can create your own brush shape and use that if you want to avoid using any pre-made component at all.

I routinely give a 1 to any entries that use brushes to create heart shapes! (Just kidding! ;) )

For that kind of look you might also want to check into creating "shaped bokeh" -- a heart is a popular shape -- even I've tried it!

Photoshop brushes are legal in extended, yes, but there's one caveat: It's possible to make a "brush" out of an actual IMAGE: i.e. you can photograph a bird, extract it from the sky, turn it into a "brush" and "paint" a flock of birds in the sky, but yuou'd be afoul of the rules if the bird was not captured during the challenge submission window or, worse yet, if it were somebody else's bird and you used it for yourself.

So the warning here is, be very wary of third-party brushes that paint realistic scenery or objects. One example that comes to mind is a popular brush that paints waves in an image... It's a very sticky gray area, unfortunately.

Do you mean waves like... ocean waves... realistic water?

Or draws curving lines in an image?

"a very sticky gray area" That's an enchanting challenge suggestion, Robert. Archival?

I mean like using a photo to create a brush and paint the photo onto your canvas; waves, trees, boats, whatever. You can actually DO it if you want to, in Extended, but it needs to be YOUR photo and needs to be shot within the challenge submission phase, unless (of course) it's an archival challenge.

Why? Because if we didn't do this it would like a workaround of the (already seriously toned down) so-called "artwork" rule, as in: "I have made Ansel's 'Moon Over Half Dome' into a brush and painted it in as a background on my blah little river valley shot. It's a Photoshop brush so that's OK, right?"

Wrong :-)

The "wavy lines" are fine...
