I was wondering what lenses I should get for my new D70. I have the Nikon 18-70 DX, I also have a cheap sigma kit 28-80 and 70-300. I mainly do landscape shooting. Also anyone think that the Nikon VR lenses are worth the money if you use a tripod?

I have 3 lenses. 24-120, 70-200 and the 105 Macro. All Nikor VR. I am happy with all of them but the one I love is the 105. I like macro photography and it is simply a joy to use and gives me good results. I took a photo today for the Macro w/o Bugs or Flowers. I am not going to use it because I have better ideas. But it was a photo of a mound of couscous on a cutting board. You can see each individual grain, and that each one is made up of tiny blobs of grain. You can see clearly the reflection off each grain and the shadow each grain casts. I love that lens!

Is this the 24-120 lens you have.... Nikon AFS 24-120mm f3.5-5.6G VR ?

I use the 24-120 f:3.5-5.6D as my primary lens. I use it for landscapes, sports, and portraiture. I think it is a fantastic lens, sharp, nice contrast, easy to use. Slightly heavy, but that's what you get for good glass. I have never used the VR version, so I can't compare. In decent light, I have never had a problem getting sharp pictures, but when the light drops off, you have to push the ISO, especially if you are at the longer lengths of the zoom. I have heard good things about Nikon's VR in general, so you might want to go the extra bit if you have the cash.

Nikkor 50MM F/1.4

Shoot this lense, and you'll want to ebay your others.

If you primarily shoot landscapes with a quality tripod, then the VR technology would really not be put to ideal use in my mind. There are many pro grade Nikkors you could have w/out the VR that would shoot just as sharp from a tripod.

Now, if you do nature freehand, or candid street, or sports, then the VR would be a great feature, but as you describe your technique I don't see the point. Go with that 105 - I've rerady nothing but praise for it.

I agree that if you use a tripod for your landscape photography the VR function is quite useless so I wouldn't fork out the extra cash for it.

I find that my kit is now complete with:
18-70mm DX (for wide angle and zoom versatility)
105 Sigma EX macro (for macros)
80-400mm VR (for great reach) I chose VR cuz I intens to shoot more wildlife free hand. The VR function ROCKS! Here are some shots taken at 400mm free hand:

VR lens are good if you are not using a tripod... But then for landscapes at wide angle you don't really need VR.

For landscapes i'd get nikon 18-35, it's awesome and not very expensive (relatively speaking). Although, my 24-120 VR works ok in the wide angle area too. But whatever you do, don't buy sigma 15-30.

I also love my 60/2.8D micro, can use it for general stuff, for portraits almost, and for 1:1 macro. Although 105 macro may be better suited for your needs.

Saving for 70-200/2.8 VR... That's expensive though, and i don't really need it. If you do, look into getting a used 80-200/2.8. Not worse piece of glass, they say, but costs several times less. HTH.

I have both the 24-120 and the 80-400 VR, and think they are great. I use them mostly hand held. The VR feature works great. But it does use up the batteries. If you are going to use a tripod then save the extra money and buy other lens. I have the Nikkor 60mm macro and get great results with it. One problem, is working close to the subject. This is where the 105mm would be better.

I love the 105mm Micro for macro and portrait work
