I vote in a similar manner except that I use different ‘place holders’ for the first round: Either a 6 or no vote at all (yet). This is much less disturbing for the people who are online and see their average jumping up and down (or the other way around) and get frustrated.

Same here. I normally start with relatively lower votes(for example 6's for the images I like) and see if I can increase them later, much more nicer for the people who watch the progress in voting. Handing out a 10 and lower to a 6 is really demotivating.
But thanks ThingFish for coming forwards so we now at least know what is happening

If you're gonna "sort on first pass" it is probably best to use the numbers on each side of the true median, 5.5: 6's for the ones with promise, 5's for the ones you don't think you will promote. That way the drops will not be precipitous and the rises will always have meaning, in the sense that any vote 7 or higher will raise the score on practically all images :-)

Right Robert thanks that gave me the following idea of voting which I think will work and will keep everyone happy. This will involve 4 passes. No drops will happen at all, scores can only be adjusted upwards or stay the same.
I'll do a first pass where I give one's to the images I feel are between a 1 and a 5
Then I'll do a second pass giving five's to the images I feel are between a 5 and a 10
My third pass will adjust the between 1 and 5 images
My fourth pass will adjust the between 5 and 10 images

I think that should/could work fine.... always open to any better ideas of course :)

As an (un?)interesting side note...

My score is EXACTLY the same with 18 votes as it was with 12 votes.

Exactly the same.

And now, my other two entries in voting have the exact same score!
