Last week Mark Wiley was kind enough to ship to me his Mavic Air drone so I could take it for a spin:

Suffice it to say, that was like dangling Toblerone in front of a Chocaholic, and 2 days after it arrived I ordered a Mavic Air 2 from B&H, which (amazingly, arrived overnight :-) I've been jealous of drones for a long time, there are SO many landscapes I want a higher vantage point on...

Wish me fair winds and golden hours :-)

If only Ken would stop by... He'd have a great visual for us of you with wings... airborne.

10-4 good buddy! There's a Bear in the air!

Welcome to the club! Mark was really helpful with advice when I was considering my first drone purchase last year. I now have both a Mavic Mini and an Autel Evo. Be careful of the wind you fly in. I got my Evo caught in a strong wind and almost lost it over downtown, then upon landing it got caught in an updraft and crashed up. $320 in repairs, most of it for a new gimbal/camera.
My Evo adventure, for your amusement

Does the Air 2 use the Fly app? My biggest disappointment with the Mini was the limited number of devices the app would work on. I was aware it didn't shoot RAW but didn't know about the app limitations. I was fortunate to have one of the phones it worked with but could not use my 7" Galaxy tab as a controller screen.

Yes, it uses the DJI Fly app. It's all I know, so it seems fine to me :-)

+ OUCH!!!

Here's the view of Skinnequit Pond and Nantucket Sound in a misty rain from 400' above my lair :-) You can click on "see full size" if you want more detail. Danged good camera for such a teensy thing, innit?

It's just another kind of camera. Once more members have them, it will be harder to get a high scoring shot with them.

My second purchase was an Autel Evo. No geofencing.

I both love and hate drones. The images you can take with them are breathtaking and offer a completely different view on a landscape. The problem is, more and more people have them and they are mostly used in the beauty spots on Skye (and elsewhere in Scotland). I really get crazy from the constant buzzing you can hear constantly. For me going to those places is about relaxing or getting pictures, but no relaxing with all those drones in the air. Even more so, the sound of these drones have an impact on the animals: our dogs, the many sheep that are always present and the many birds that are nesting on the rocks near those beauty spots. So I really think that using drones in places like that should be forbidden.

I hear you. I'm aware of this, it is one of the reasons I have not gotten a drone sooner, is the potential for intrusiveness. Regardless, here on Cape Cod we're not allowed to fly them at the National Seashore, and in America in general they are restricted from the National Parks, at least. I need to study up more... On the plus side, when you go way high they can barely be heard, it seems. At least that's true of the Mavic Air 2...

I wanted to fly one in Palo Duro Canyon when I was there in January. Couldn't find any signs prohibiting it or anything on their web site, but I asked a park ranger and was told no. Turns out that where I was hiking, nobody would have noticed or cared, but I left it in the car.

That will be my approach. In the off-season, the National Seashore is not patrolled hardly at all and very few people are about, so it should be OK. And early-morning runs ought not be a problem at any time. So I am guessing. Worst-case scenario, as long as I avoid people, is some official gives me an education :-)

Enjoyed the drone photograph. Nice capture. I love drone photography. Aerial photography is difficult but it lets us be creative with your shots and capture images the human eye would otherwise never be able to see. That said thereís a lot to learn when it comes to taking the perfect aerial photo.
