Was playing around today and came up with these and wondered if anyone liked them. I'm quite open to the idea that people will think they are complete crap :) Each picture is 5 shots, overlaid in photoshop. The pictures were all taken on a tripod, at varying degrees of sharp to very out of focus and each over or under exposed depending on how they were going to be layered. Would love to hear what people think.

Urm, yes - like it said above, each one is 5 shots, at varying levels of focus so some of the layers in the image is in focus, and others are not. The 5 final pictures represent 25 original images.

Same for me Gordon, 7692 is my prefered.
88 is too 'dry' for me and I do not like centered but in that case the space on the left bothers me a little.
79 : I prefere the first one to the _2 one
Personally I like the concept and I do not mind not having too much 'in focus' areas for the eye to stay when it's in a composition like that.

And Gordon, if you do not mind, I'd add my digital-imaging-whatever-people-call-it with this picture called 'War Death'.
Same as Gordon totally open to .... 'total crap' or 'already done' .

"War Death" is Here (Attention Potentially strong but nothing offending or disgusting)

But please look at Gordon picture first :-) first message of the thread.

Ummm... War Death... I like it, but it scared me. You should put a disclaimer on that thing. I was ready for it to turn around and scream at me (I hate those websites that are all happy and then there is scaryness and screamingness. -shivers-)

Really ?
Sorry I did not thought about that.

Somehow it means that it's pretty strong so somehow part of me is 'happy' with your reaction but I did not want to scare. Maybe stronger that what I thought. You know something like the driver is always less afraid in the car than the people sitting besides him

Added disclaimer. Lionel

Gordon, I like them, thinking them very interesting ideas. Personally, I like 7688 the best. Well done!

neat shot Gordon. I learned about taking photos in the 4th Dimension last night at my Camera Club meeting. A commercial photographer was there and taught us about doing multiper exposures like that and putting them all together. By doing so you can do things like paint with the light. Neat stuff, I've got to practice and see what I could come up with.

Gordon, these look good... I have done something similar with 35mm slides by sandwiching two slides together... each slide is over exposed and one is out of focus to some degree to create a similar effect... good work :)

Gordon - predictably, I'd give them 10 :).

I like them, G, especially the bird of paradise (?)...I think that technique would be especially effective with even more bright vibrant colors...like if you could have gotten the background to be a super bright electric blue or something.

This concept has been hit and miss for me with 35m slides. I have not developed a 'rule of thumb' for my overexposures so that I can get it right every time. When I did these slide sandwiches, I usually made about 3 shots in focus and 3 shots out of focus at +1, +2, and +3 stops of overexposure... It was hit and miss to say the least.

I know what you mean about stronger colours - I was trying this out with the only subjects that I had to hand, which are on their way out - hoping to try it again with some more thought to the composition and maybe with a more arresting subject too. The ideas for doing these came from the book Photo Impressionism and the Subjective Image by Freeman Patterson, Andre Gallant. The techniques in that book are all based on using film but I tried adapting them to photoshop and was happily surprised - now to find the right subject matter...

Gordon, I like the first one most. Looks like a great technique. The softness and blur fits to the flowers and the bright lighting perfectly. This makes me want a better camera ;-)

Lionel, I also like your image. But it wasn't done in-camera, right? Did you use your own photos and mixed them in image editor? Can you explain a little bit how oyu did that?
I don't mind the dark theme. I'm constantly trying to get into the right mood of despair this week and this fits perfectly ;-)

This isn't really the camera :) For each of these I took several shots, from a tripod, of exactly the same composition. The only thing I changed across the shots was the focus, so in some, the front of the subject was sharply focused, in others the back was in focus, some the whole thing was sharply focused, with a small aperture and then at least one with everything blurred to provide the soft/ blooming effect. Each of the shots were either over or underexposed to give a combined correct exposure (though I haven't worked this bit out really yet)

Then, I layered them in photoshop, (drag from the layer palette and drop with shift pressed to align the frames, on the final image) to give the same effect as if the images were printed on slides and then sandwiched together and projected

(putting the blurriest shot at the bottom as a 'base' then layering upwards, towards the sharpest image at the front) and then setting the blending mode to 'screen'. From there I mainly played with the opacity settings to merge things to different degrees, and also in some cases changed the blending modes, or inverted a shot to strengthen the colours.

Could do the same thing with any camera and a tripod.

Oh! Then I misunderstood "multiple exposures". Sorry. I'm not so used to take photos out of DPC rules (or outside of DPC for that matter) ;-)
Thank you a lot for the detailed description! I'll try that sometimes.

Gordon,

Never mind -- saw a bit I missed before -- had asked about blending modes and trying things other than screen -- just saw that you did....

Yup - I did try that a bit, but was quickly getting overwhelmed with potential options!

By the time I had 5 shots, with different blending modes, different opacities and then the ordering changing how the final result looked I was getting to a point where I was struggling to understand what did what.

Certainly lots of potenial in the blending modes though - some work better than others and the initial over/underexposure and subject choices have a big impact too. Lots of fun...

great photos, Gordon! i love the colors and the soft feel. my favorite is 7679_2. i like the muted colors and the 3-D effect. good work! :)

No Stephan, it was not done in-camera. It is a 'combine' using a pilot picture from an advertising from the 50s and a mummy picture representing 'Agony' I think that I found in an egyptian book. I just used 2 layers in photoshop, I think I used 'hard light' blending and I soften/blured different area on the border of the helmet of the pilot.

From Sher9204 lionel, i love your "war death", too! VERY powerful image. nice work. :)
Thanks .. That somthing that was in my mind for some times, I even had the pictures ready but was waiting and finally did it in 2 hours the other day.

Hey Gordon, to hell with what other people think, as long as the pictures please you that all that counts. Too many photographer try too hard to please everyone that they have no fun taking pictures. To me, fun is 99.9% of photography. By the way...I like your effort
