You can use any picture taken up to the submission deadline -- it does not have to be archival.

So when I read it, I thought perhaps a diptych or triptych, but not so?

No. At least, not necessarily. I believe the intention is that you blend two or more images into a single image.

Yeah, like a composite image (i.e. more than one). :)

But, like a diptych is a composite of two images...

I'm not skilled in the Mark Wiley composites. That takes talent. :-)
