My turn - I'm yet another computer geek for THE major Huge Airplane manufacturing company that's not in Europe. We also support NASA as a Prime Contractor. Plus we are a major war-mongering company for flying weapons/weapon systems (basically war profitteers!). I've done everything from running Mainframes, to buying computing hardware, to installing major sites. Today, I refill laserjet printers, move computers and either tell users they aren't using their computers right or telling our hardware vendor to replace things. (Today is less fullfilling than in past years.)

I wasn't keeping the company name a secret, just keeping you all guessing! I work for Boeing, aka 747 jumbo jets, etc.

Happy Birthday Isaac! Schone Geburstag!!

I am not sure what you mean, but HIPAA is government mandated, Privacy, Electronic Data transmission and Security rules or otherwise known as the Health Insurance Privacy and Accountability Act.

Its intent is to make patient medical records more private and secure.

Well see, I had the specific topic nailed. I just have a different opinion about what the ultimate effect will probably be...send me a list of who's sponsoring or lobbying for/against and I'll tell you whether I think it will protect patient privacy or health insurers' profits.

Happy birthday, Isaac!

I am a full-time professional writer. My primary technical writing client runs prisons and jails in the USA, Canada and Australia. I also spend a lot of my time (and geenrate maybe 40% of my income) ghosting articles and speeches for a number of politicians (and would-be politicians).

Hey thanks all, but you should know Isaac probably won't see this thread until Saturday or Monday...and you better watch out after that 'cause he'll have his new Fuji and a 32mb card!

And he did have time to shoot his own birthday photo when I dropped him at school this morning:
Happy Birthday To Me

I'm supported by the US government while I get through medical school. Don't worry, though, cause they're going to make me pay it all back someday :)

A geek! Does that make me geek too? Franziska is my boss and she is responsible for making me addictive to this site! Just kidding :-) eBay powerseller (part-time now) and eBay sniper too!

I'm a Test Development Engineer = mostly writing software to control instumentation for the testing of electonic equipment.

Can someone explain the difference between a geek and a nerd so I can define myself properly?

I'm a mechanical engineer working for a consulting engineering firm specializing in the fields of power generation and energy. I've been in this field for almost 5 years now.

Before that, I spent close to 2 years being a field engineer, doing overhauls and troubleshooting industrial gas turbines throughout the Americas. Gas turbines are like huge jet engines bolted to the floor and coupled to generators as means of producing power.

And even before that, I used to be a New Brunswicker!!! (Actually, I will always remain one :)) Yep, just like Jacko and Refracted and KimInNb. Looks like half of the bloody province is on DPChallenge now!....

I'm trying my hardest to be a geek, really I am. After finishing my Bachelors degree in history (no use to anyone) I worked as a web designer in Dubln, Ireland. Now though I've returned to University to study for my Master's Degree in Computer Science.

Yep, absolutely and without a doubt! I'm not going to be the only geek on the team! ;)

Been teaching English in Japan for about five years, elementary schools, Comapany classes and so on. Finally returning to the UK in May, via the Trans Mongolian Express. Will be very unemployed when I return, but applying to study Photography part-time and hopefully get a job in the Industry. It's all kind of up in the air at the moment, but I like that!

I spent 12 years in the nuclear power industry as a Reactor Operator and Electronics Technician in the US Navy, serving on submarines. Of my 12 years, 3 was school, 3 on a submarine travelling all over Europe and the Carribean, 4 as an instructor (teaching and certifying Reactor Operators), and 2 in a shipyard building a new submarine. This consisted of quality assurance and training the new crew for operations.

I got out of the Navy and moved to Colorado with no plans, no job, no anything. I got a job at Starbuck's coffee. That was the most fun job I've ever had, and the most brilliant move I've ever made because I met my wife there! I was used to working 100+ hours a week, so I wound up working at Starbucks, US Space Command in Colorado Springs as a contractor, as an Accounts Manager for Entertainment Youth Fund Raising, and a retail sales position at Software Etc (to get free software!), all at the same time!

I then got my current job of six years with Applied Mechanical Consulting Group. I do quality assurance, certification testing, industrial scheduling with Primaver Project Planner, Construction Management, and Project Management for the Semiconductor and Bio-pahrmeceutical industries. I am currently on a six month assignemnt in Manassas, VA performing modifications to diffusion furnaces used in semiconductor manufacturing. We are gutting the units and rebuilding them in a new upgraded body. It deals with lots of high-tech mechanical components, electronics, and robotics. Once the unit is rebuilt, we program the robotics, debug the electronics, and complete all the safety interlock testing and operational checks.

I don't know what my next assignment will be! I am willing to take on any assignment from high tech, to classified military/defense, to washing trucks and digging ditches! I haven't had to do the latter choices yet, but I would do it if it means feeding my family, and I would have a great time doing it!!!

Oh yeah... I forgot to mention my hobbies! I love photography (coupled with Photoshop and web authoring) and woodworking (including designing furniture). My wife and I would love to start our own business with our hobbies (she has degrees in Industrial Design and Fine Art), but we are too busy providing for our three little boys to risk trying something for ourselves. Someday, though....

I work as a software developer for Lockheed Martin, writing training simulations for various Navy schools, usually involves making simulations of sonar and tactical systems installed in ships and submarines. Enjoy it tremendously!! Though I live in Canada I travel often to Virginia on business since there seem to be so many navy schools there :) Its great to see an application you coded being used by classrooms of naval students! :)

I'm a Kindergarten student, which is why my dad's typing this for me (I may not be online myself until Monday).
I just got my new camera, which I used to take this picture at school this morning. It will be fun to send in some pictures again, although I don't have that much time to vote!
