You might enjoy this: Portrait Artist of the Year 2020

Fair Warning: It's addicting. I binge watched last week.

That is all (and yes, this could fit 3 different photos of the 5, pretty sure my anonymity is safe based on just this comment).

Why would you intentionally enter something inferior you're capable of??? me no comprendo
Getting a ribbon is something you should earn by yourself, work hard and love what you;re doing, results will follow.

I totally agree with Georges. I was going to say the same thing but I didn’t want any backlash. But now that it’s out there I thought it was a bit strange that you said you could do a lot better, we can all do better, this was your chance to shine. Anyway just saying no hard feelings please ;)

To be perfectly frank, the answer is two-fold. I do not want to win a ribbon in a pool of (then 4, now 5) pictures, just because there are no other options. That's me. I really want to have this challenge come back at a time when the world is not so crazy, when I am not so terrified to be going out into it where I might accidently, and unknowingly come into contact with a random surface that someone who is sick has been in contact with, that could be passed on to my child, or my ill mother-in-law and result in the death of a loved one, or even (at best) a very severe illness to myself. Due to work I have been infected with the H1N1 virus - TWICE. I have had to be tested for TB. I still have to go into the office because I am essential services in providing IT support at Canada Border Services. I do not want to go out and risk myself, or my family, for a chance at a blue ribbon in a small field, but I wanted to enter because there were only 3 people and feel that if this is ever to come back, we should show that there is interest in the challenge. But if it ever comes back, I want to be able to give it my best, and now I can't, so I worked for several days to get things right, so that the scene was setup properly, and the editing worked properly, to capture what I had in my head. And I succeeded, as amazing as that may seem. I truly captured what I see. I have tried to do that so many times here before, and I never get it. But this time, I did. And I love that I have a comment that sees that. That validation is worth more than a blue ribbon. I captured the essence and conveyed it across the world to someone who saw it and got it.
Do they really think it's a great photo? No. Neither do I. But it's what I wanted, and that is all I care about with this entry.

….

well, that, and Not winning so I can try again :)

Exactly the same here, Lynn. Wonder if the individual scores match up too.

I've left detailed comments on all of them. I treated it as if these were all entered in a monthly Free Study since that's essentially what it was (I never apply scores based on the competition within a challenge though I may bump/hit a couple at the end if I feel the need to assign a top 1, 2 or 3 if they've separated themselves from the field). In the comments I told them what they would have received under those circumstances.

In my comments I was plainly honest about what I did and didn't see and tried to do so in a way that I would want to hear criticism from someone who is trying to help me become better at what I'm doing. If you are one of the 6 and are in any way offended or confused by my comments please reach out afterward and I'll be happy to clarify.

Well that's a bloody shame, because people took the time to comment on it like you cared enough to show us something. If you didn't want to do that you could have not entered and saved us all a bit of time.

Obviously, this challenge did not get as many entries as I thought. And I really began to think it was a loss and all the naysayers where correct. But then I looked through them all and then I noticed that there was 138 comments, per 6 entries. That makes it 23 comments PER entry.

That , to me now, is a TOTAL win for everyone. I don't remember the last time anyone got 26 comments on a photo in a challenge. The 6 people that entered have had a Master Class of Award winners, giving out comments, how to do things, how they would do things, what they think etc.

This is an unbelievable opportunity to learn, and I know I will be reading each comment as well, to learn how others think.

To everyone that made an effort, well done. You did well. To everyone that entered, you just got about $10 grands worth of tutorials and lessons that no one on this site has ever had.

And to everyone that commented, you guys are my heroes. You went above and beyond at this point, I can not wait to read all your comments and learn something new, as I am sure I will.

This challenge might have been a mouse, but it roared like a like a lion in the end.

Well done everyone. xox

The first few years I was on DPC, I commented a lot and that was the strongest learning experience for me. I made an effort to comment not on the really great entries, those were easy to heap praise on and redundant, getting lots of comments already. I also didn't comment much on the really poor entries because it was easy to figure out something major done wrong. I left lots of comments on the entries I left 5's on. I made myself analyze why it wasn't bad, but also why it didn't make any impact one me, and I learned a lot that I could apply to my own photography.

I've voted and the way I see it the photographers that entered won't learn anything from my comment before rollover so I'll comment on every image that doesn't just have 'n/a' in the photographers comments - seems fair to me?

That seems reasonable to me.

Looks like we cross posted and this seems an admirable way to comment - win win :)
