As a non-ribbon winner (unless you count the brown) I'm not really interested in a non-ribbon winners challenge, feels kind of like the minor leagues almost becoming a participation award. What I would value is comments on how it was done (although google does a great job of for example figuring out how to shoot heart bokeh) or comments to help me improve my own images. With the low number of entries I agree it's easier now than ever to win a medal. I keep trying and at some point when I get the right formula or there are only 3 entries on a challenge I'll get a ribbon. I re-joined recently to try and spark my hobby again and I'll keep shooting what I like, might not always be an image that appeals to the voting masses but if it appeals to me that's good.

The low number of voters and their likes and dislikes also impact what we see on the front page, same people voting for the same type of images is going to yield similar results.

I think I made a noise a long while ago along these lines, yes I think it would be a
morale booster to us with average scores in the 4s and 5s, I suggest it be a minimal
rules challenge as well.

I think it would stimulate interest and motivation in those members who enjoy photography but may not have the time or inclination as some of us do in winning ribbons. Knowing that the usual bunch is not involved would entice many who would like a chance at receiving praise for a job well done. I would also add that if those who do have a collection of ribbons and HM's would take the time to comment and critique all the entries in the "Non Ribbon Winner Challenge" It would be a nice thing to do and give the entrants the opportunity to learn from their efforts. Isn't that what this website is all about?

Yah.....what he said!

I would commit to commenting on the whole challenge.

I'm feeling especially warm & fuzzy about the idea having woken up today to find that after 11+ years, I now qualify for Juliet's ribbon hogs category! LOL!!!

When I was a tennis player we used to have a tournament called "Every Players Cup" which was for those players that had never won a club championship. This is along those same lines. I think it would stimulate interest and motivate some people.

Lol Anyone with 3 ribbons is a ribbon hog. or so we used to think, the main champion used to scalvert everyone and their mother wanted to be him! He was reigning champion!

And if anyone thinks that me saying "Ribbon Hog" is UN PC, it was a term we used to use for people that had several ribbons, not offensive at all.

This sounds like a wonderful idea to me. And the fact that ribbon winners are not competing would, I think, be a minor blip on the happiness scale.
A personal aside from callow youth, in keeping with Susan/Beaubeau's comment. In high school I ran track, a sprinter. At the end of the freshman year I had yet to win a medal. This was in NYC. In June each borough had a special meet, Novice Championships, for those, well, novices; for me, in The Bronx. So the relay team I was on, 88o yds., took gold. All day long I walked on air. The feeling is still fresh in my memory.
I'd be so pleased to have several as of yet unadorned entrants experience such exultation in a photographers' novice championship.

LOL, Gen! I still think it is a solid idea, and I am thinking that there are going to be a lot more entries in the coming months when we are all housebound! =(

It looks like everybody will be a ribbon winner in this challenge!

Will you give this a second chance, as an archival challenge.

A lot of people supported this, then the world went sideways?

I admire the 3 entries we have, and they will be inundated with comments, as most of the ribbon winners have said they will reply

So pretty please????

I wouldn't say we'll never do that, Juliet, but here's my thinking right now;

1. DPC is a CHALLENGE site. To be a ribbon-winner, mostly you need to meet challenges well.
2. Archival "challenges" are a sort of add-on, people like them, they are not what we are about really.
3. To tell the non-ribbon winners "go back in your archives and find the best picture you ever took and submit it for a chance to become a ribbon winner" IMO sort of misses the point.

I'm not against Non-Ribboner challenges but I don't think archival is sensible for them.

+1
Still seems a little bit odd that there are only three entries, maybe you can stretch the challenge to be a free study for them, since many of them maybe cannot escape the home.

Someone should post about the challenge on the DPC facebook page. I would, but I am currently practicing Social Media Distancing. ...and really enjoying it.

Well, it is what it is.

New ideas work or they take time or they die.

Times are changing, nothing ventured nothing gained

The idea was good. It was a combination of the challenge topic and unfortunate timing that caused it to fail. Although landscapes aren't really my thing I was hoping to enter.

Maybe it's worth trying again with a topic suitable for shooting from home.

If I'd never had a ribbon, I'd stick any ole photo in there...

I'd still get a Top Ten! :(

It's not worth it. I want to get Top Ten on merit, not due to lack of entries.
